The Conquest of Makkah

Translation

✧ [ How Faḍālah b. ʿUmayr b. al-Mulawwaḥ became Muslim ] and the Prophet's ﷺ awareness of what he intended Ibn Hishām said: One of the people of knowledge related to me that Faḍālah b. ʿUmayr b. al-Mulawwaḥ al-Laythī intended to kill the Messenger of God ﷺ while he was circumambulating the House—in the year of the conquest. When he drew near to him, the Messenger of God ﷺ said, “Faḍālah?” He said, “Yes.” He said, “What were you saying to yourself?” He said, “Nothing. I was remembering God.” The Messenger of God ﷺ laughed, then said, “Ask God's forgiveness.” Then he placed his hand upon his chest, and he became calm. Faḍālah used to say: By God, he did not lift his hand from my chest until there was nothing created more beloved to me than him. Faḍālah returned to his family. He said: I passed by a woman to whom I used to speak, and she said, “Come to converse.” He said, “No.” Faḍālah set out saying: She said, “Come to converse,” and I said, “No. God and Islam refuse me.” If you saw Muḥammad and his tribe, at the conquest on the day the idols are broken, you would see God's religion become manifest, while polytheism's face is covered by darkness. Abū ʿUmar mentioned it in al-Durar, but did not mention it in al-Istīʿāb, though it meets his criterion. Al-Qāḍī mentioned something similar in al-Shifāʾ.
