Translation

✧ Mention of Iblīs's wailing and grief, and the jinn's plot against the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, their being driven away from him, and Nāʾila's invocation of woe Abū Yaʿlā and Abū Nuʿaym narrated from Ibn ʿAbbās ؓ that he said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ conquered Makkah, Iblīs let out a wail, and his offspring gathered to him. He said: "Despair of returning the community of Muḥammad to polytheism after this day of yours, but spread among them—meaning Makkah—lamentation and poetry." Ibn Abī Shayba narrated from Makḥūl—may Allah have mercy on him—that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered Makkah, the jinn met him, throwing sparks at him. Jibrīl ﷺ said: "Seek refuge, O Muḥammad, with these words: 'I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah, which neither a righteous nor a wicked person can surpass, from the evil of what descends from the sky and what ascends in it, and from the evil of what is scattered in the earth and what comes out of it, and from the evil of the night and the day, and from the evil of every comer who comes, except with good, O Most Merciful.'" Ḥanbal b. Isḥāq said: Abū al-Rabīʿ reported to us, from Yaʿqūb al-Qummī, Jaʿfar b. Abī al-Mughīra narrated to us, from Ibn Abzā, who said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ conquered Makkah, an old gray-haired Abyssinian woman came, scratching her face and invoking woe. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "That is Nāʾila; she has despaired of ever being worshipped in this land of yours."
