The Conquest of Makkah
Translation
✧ His ﷺ performing ghusl on the day of the conquest and his praying at the time of ḍuḥā out of gratitude to Allah Almighty On the authority of Umm Hāniʾ ؓ who said: In the year of the day of the conquest, two men from Banū Makhzūm fled to me. Ibn Hishām said: They were al-Ḥārith b. Hishām and Zuhayr b. Abī Umayya b. al-Mughīra. Ibn Isḥāq said: She was married to Hubayra b. Abī Wahb al-Makhzūmī, and I granted them protection. She said: ʿAlī entered upon me and said: I shall kill them. She said: When I heard him say that, I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was in upper Makkah. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw me, he welcomed me and said: “What has brought you, O Umm Hāniʾ?” She said: I said: O Messenger of Allah, I had granted protection to two men from my in-laws, and ʿAlī wanted to kill them. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “We have granted protection to whom you have granted protection.” Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ rose to perform his ghusl, and Fāṭima screened him. Then he took a garment and wrapped himself in it. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed eight rakʿahs as the supererogatory prayer of ḍuḥā. Related by Muslim and al-Bayhaqī. And on the authority of the two of them, that on the day of the conquest of Makkah the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed ghusl in her house and prayed eight rakʿahs. She said: I did not see him pray any prayer lighter than it, except that he completed its bowing and its prostration. Related by al-Bukhārī and al-Bayhaqī. Al-Bukhārī said: Abū al-Walīd narrated to us, Shuʿba narrated to us, from ʿAmr b. Murra, from Ibn Abī Laylā who said: No one told us that he saw the Prophet ﷺ praying ḍuḥā other than Umm Hāniʾ, for she mentioned that on the day of the conquest of Makkah he performed ghusl in her house, then prayed eight rakʿahs. She said: I did not see him pray any prayer lighter than it, except that he completed the bowing and the prostration. The time of the Messenger of Allah’s ﷺ prayer was ḍuḥā, so those who thought it was the ḍuḥā prayer assumed so, but this was actually the prayer of the conquest. The commanders of Islam, when they conquered a fortress or a city, would pray this prayer immediately after the conquest, following the example of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. In the story there is evidence that it was because of the conquest, out of gratitude to Allah for it, for she said: I did not see him pray it before it or after it. In the story of the conquest there is a point of jurisprudence: the permissibility of a woman’s granting protection and her assurance of safety for one man or two men, just as the Prophet ﷺ permitted Umm Hāniʾ’s assurance of safety for her two in-laws.
