Translation
✧ Abū Sufyān and Ḥakīm b. Ḥizām’s wish to return to their people to inform them of this, and their being held back to see the armies of Allah, Blessed and Exalted Ibn ʿUqbah said: When they turned to leave, al-ʿAbbās said: O Messenger of Allah, I do not trust Abū Sufyān; he may turn back from his Islam, so hold him back until he comes to understand and sees the armies of Allah—Exalted—with you. Ibn Abī Shaybah narrated from Abū Salamah and Yaḥyā b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Ḥāṭib: When Abū Sufyān turned away, Abū Bakr said: O Messenger of Allah, would you order that Abū Sufyān be detained on the road? Ibn Isḥāq and Muḥammad b. ʿUmar said: When Abū Sufyān went to depart, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to al-ʿAbbās: “Detain him at the narrow pass of the valley, at the snout of the mountain, until the armies of Allah pass by him so he may see them.” He said: So I went out and detained him at the narrow pass of the valley, where the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded me to detain him. Ibn ʿUqbah and Muḥammad b. ʿUmar said: Abū Sufyān said: “Treachery, O Banū Hāshim?” Al-ʿAbbās said: “The people of prophethood do not act treacherously.” Ibn ʿUqbah’s wording: “We are not treacherous, but stay until morning so you may see the armies of Allah and what Allah has prepared for the polytheists.” Ibn ʿUqbah said: He detained them at the narrow pass, short of al-Arāk, facing Makkah, until morning. Ibn ʿAsākir narrated from ʿAṭāʾ: He said: I think he only raised it to Ibn ʿAbbās—may Allah, Exalted, be pleased with them both—who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said on the night he drew near Makkah during the campaign of the conquest: “In Makkah there are four men of Quraysh whom I hold above polytheism and for whom I desire Islam.” It was said: “Who are they, O Messenger of Allah?” He said: “ʿAttāb b. Usayd, Jubayr b. Muṭʿim, Ḥakīm b. Ḥizām, and Suhayl b. ʿAmr.”
