Translation
✧ The consensus of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to march to Makkah Ibn ʿUqbah, Ibn Isḥāq, Muḥammad b. ʿUmar, and others said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ intended to march to Makkah, he sent Abū Qatādah b. Ribʿī with eight men as a raiding party to the interior of Iḍam—between it and Madinah being three barīd—so that anyone thinking would suppose that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had headed in that direction, and so that the news would not go that way. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ made clear the march against Quraysh, and he sent to the people of the desert and the Muslims around them, saying to them: "Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him be present in Ramadan in Madinah." And he sent messengers to every region until they came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ appointed as his deputy over Madinah Abū Ruhm Kulthūm b. Ḥuṣayn al-Ghifārī; and it is said Ibn Umm Maktūm, and this was mentioned by Ibn Saʿd and al-Balādhurī, but the former is the correct one, and it was narrated by Imām Aḥmad and al-Ṭabarānī with a good chain from Ibn ʿAbbās ؓ. [Ḥassān's poetry inciting the people] Ḥassān b. Thābit said, inciting the people and mentioning the killing of the men of Khuzāʿah: It grieved me, though I did not witness in the plain of Makkah, the men of Banū Kaʿb whose necks were being cut By the hands of men who had not drawn their swords, and many slain whose clothes were not stripped Would that I knew whether my help will reach Suhayl b. ʿAmr, and its piercing and its eagle And Ṣafwān, an old one who yearned from the edge of his anus, so this is the time of war—its band is tightened So do not feel secure from us, O son of Umm Mujālid, when it is milked pure and its fang becomes sharp And do not be dismayed by us, for our swords have a falling upon death whose door is opened Ibn Hishām said: Ḥassān's saying "by the hands of men who had not drawn their swords" means Quraysh; and "son of Umm Mujālid" means ʿIkrimah b. Abī Jahl.
