Translation
✧ Summary of the story of Shuʿayb ﷺ He is the orator of the prophets, Shuʿayb b. Mīkīl b. Yashjan, and it is said: b. Yashjun b. Lāwī b. Yaʿqūb, and it is said: Shuʿayb b. Thuwayb b. ʿAbaqā b. Madyan b. Ibrāhīm, and other genealogies have been mentioned. Allah, glorified be He, sent him to the people of the Thicket from the land of Madyan, which is a village in the land of Maʿān on the borders of Syria. The people of Madyan were disbelievers who cut the road, frightened travelers, and worshipped the Thicket, which was a tree of the thicket surrounded by dense tangled trees. They gave short measure and weight. Their prophet forbade them from all of this, but they did not desist or respond, and they claimed they had freedom of trade to do as they wished without restriction by any law or religion. Rather, they increased in stubbornness by giving him the choice between leaving with those who believed with him from their village by force or returning to their religion. This is a great contradiction: how can they desire their freedom in their trade and wealth while denying the believers their freedom in what is more specific than that, which is creed? Shuʿayb ﷺ said to them, arguing on behalf of the believers: “Even though we were averse? We would have invented against Allah a lie if we returned to your religion after Allah has saved us from it. And it is not for us to return to it unless Allah, our Lord, should will. Our Lord has encompassed all things in knowledge. Upon Allah we have relied. Our Lord, decide between us and our people in truth, and You are the best of those who decide.” Then came the decision from Allah, glorified be He, with the destruction of the people of Shuʿayb by the cry, and they became within their homes fallen prone, as if they had never dwelt there. And Allah, glorified be He, saved Shuʿayb ﷺ and those who believed with him. Then Shuʿayb went after that to Makkah and died there at the age of one hundred and forty years.
