The story of Abraham the Friend (peace and blessings be upon him)
✧ God Almighty mentioned their story in more than one place of His clear Book. He, exalted, said in Sūrat al-Aʿrāf: "And Lot, when he said to his people: Do you commit the abomination such as none in all the worlds ever committed before you? Indeed, you approach men with lust instead of women; nay, you are a people who exceed all bounds. And the answer of his people was only that they said: Expel them from your town; they are people who would keep pure. So We saved him and his household, except his wife; she was of those who stayed behind. And We rained down upon them a rain. So behold how was the end of the criminals." [al-Aʿrāf: 80–84]. And He, exalted, said in Sūrat Hūd: "And certainly Our messengers came to Abraham with good tidings; they said: Peace. He said: Peace. And he did not delay in bringing a roasted calf. But when he saw their hands not reaching toward it, he mistrusted them and conceived a fear of them. They said: Do not fear; we have been sent to the people of Lot. And his wife was standing, and she laughed; then We gave her good tidings of Isaac, and after Isaac, Jacob. She said: Woe unto me! Shall I bear a child while I am an old woman and this my husband is an old man? Indeed, this is a strange thing. They said: Do you wonder at the command of God? The mercy of God and His blessings be upon you, O people of the house. Indeed, He is praiseworthy, glorious. So when the fear had gone from Abraham and the good tidings had come to him, he began to plead with Us for the people of Lot. Indeed, Abraham was forbearing, tender-hearted, and penitent. O Abraham, turn away from this; indeed, the command of your Lord has come, and indeed, there is coming to them a punishment that cannot be repelled. And when Our messengers came to Lot, he was grieved on their account and felt straitened for them, and he said: This is a distressful day. And his people came rushing to him, and before that they had been doing evil deeds. He said: O my people, these are my daughters; they are purer for you. So fear God and do not disgrace me regarding my guests. Is there not among you a right-minded man? They said: You know well that we have no right to your daughters, and indeed, you know what we want. He said: If only I had strength against you, or could take refuge in a strong support. They said: O Lot, we are messengers of your Lord; they shall not reach you. So set out with your family in a part of the night, and let none of you turn around, except your wife; indeed, what strikes them will strike her. Indeed, their appointment is the morning; is not the morning near? So when Our command came, We made its highest part its lowest, and rained upon it stones of layered baked clay, marked from your Lord. And it is not far from the wrongdoers." [Hūd: 69–83]. And He, exalted, said in Sūrat al-Ḥijr: "And tell them of the guests of Abraham. When they entered upon him and said: Peace. He said: Indeed, we are fearful of you. They said: Do not fear; indeed, we bring you good tidings of a knowing boy. He said: Do you bring me good tidings when old age has touched me? Of what then do you bring good tidings? They said: We bring you good tidings in truth, so do not be of the despairing. He said: And who despairs of the mercy of his Lord except those astray? He said: Then what is your business, O messengers? They said: Indeed, we have been sent to a guilty people, except the family of Lot; indeed, we will save them all, except his wife; We have decreed that she is of those who stay behind. So when the messengers came to the family of Lot, he said: Indeed, you are an unknown people. They said: No, but we have come to you with that about which they were disputing. And we have come to you with the truth, and indeed, we are truthful. So set out with your family in a part of the night, and follow behind them, and let none of you turn around, and go on to where you are commanded. And We conveyed to him this matter, that the root of these would be cut off in the morning. And the people of the city came rejoicing. He said: Indeed, these are my guests, so do not disgrace me. And fear God and do not shame me. They said: Have we not forbidden you from all people? He said: These are my daughters, if you must act. By your life, they were wandering blindly in their drunkenness. So the shout seized them at sunrise. And We made its highest part its lowest, and rained upon them stones of baked clay. Indeed, in that are signs for those who perceive. And indeed, it lies on a permanent way. Indeed, in that is a sign for the believers." [al-Ḥijr: 51–77]. And He, exalted, said in Sūrat al-Shuʿarāʾ: "The people of Lot denied the messengers, when their brother Lot said to them: Will you not fear? Indeed, I am a trustworthy messenger to you. So fear God and obey me. And I do not ask you any reward for it; my reward is only with the Lord of the worlds. Do you approach males among the worlds, and leave what your Lord has created for you of your wives? Nay, you are a transgressing people. They said: If you do not desist, O Lot, you will indeed be of those expelled. He said: Indeed, I am of those who abhor your deeds. My Lord, save me and my family from what they do. So We saved him and all his family, except an old woman among those who stayed behind. Then We destroyed the others. And We rained upon them a rain; and evil was the rain of those who were warned. Indeed, in that is a sign, but most of them were not believers. And indeed, your Lord is the Mighty, the Merciful." [al-Shuʿarāʾ: 160–175]. And He, exalted, said in Sūrat al-Naml: "And Lot, when he said to his people: Do you commit the abomination while you see? Do you indeed approach men with lust instead of women? Nay, you are a people who behave ignorantly. And the answer of his people was only that they said: Expel the family of Lot from your town; they are people who would keep pure. So We saved him and his household, except his wife; We decreed her to be of those who stayed behind. And We rained upon them a rain; and evil was the rain of those who were warned." [al-Naml: 54–58]. The story of Lot ﷺ in Sūrat al-ʿAnkabūt And He, exalted, said in Sūrat al-ʿAnkabūt: "And Lot, when he said to his people: Indeed, you commit the abomination such as none in all the worlds ever committed before you. Do you indeed approach men, and cut off the way, and commit in your assemblies the evil? And the answer of his people was only that they said: Bring upon us the punishment of God, if you are of the truthful. He said: My Lord, help me against the corrupting people. And when Our messengers came to Abraham with good tidings, they said: Indeed, we are destroying the people of this town; indeed, its people are wrongdoers. He said: Indeed, Lot is in it. They said: We know better who is in it; we will surely save him and his household, except his wife; she is of those who stay behind. And when Our messengers came to Lot, he was grieved on their account and felt straitened for them, and they said: Do not fear and do not grieve; indeed, we will save you and your family, except your wife; she is of those who stay behind. Indeed, we are sending down upon the people of this town a punishment from the sky because they have been acting immorally. And indeed, We have left from it a clear sign for people who reason." [al-ʿAnkabūt: 28–35]. And He, exalted, said in Sūrat al-Ṣāffāt: "And indeed, Lot was of the messengers. When We saved him and all his family, except an old woman among those who stayed behind. Then We destroyed the others. And indeed, you pass by them in the morning and at night; will you not then reason?" [al-Ṣāffāt: 133–138]. And He, exalted, said in al-Dhāriyāt after the story of Abraham's guests and their good tidings to him of a knowing boy: "He said: Then what is your business, O messengers? They said: Indeed, we have been sent to a guilty people, to send down upon them stones of baked clay, marked from your Lord for the transgressors. So We brought out those who were in it of the believers; and We found in it only one house of those who had submitted. And We left in it a sign for those who fear the painful punishment." [al-Dhāriyāt: 31–37]. And He said in Sūrat al-Qamar: "The people of Lot denied the warnings. Indeed, We sent upon them a storm of stones, except the family of Lot; We saved them before dawn, as a favor from Us. Thus do We reward those who give thanks. And indeed, he had warned them of Our seizure, but they disputed the warnings. And indeed, they sought to seduce him from his guests, so We obliterated their eyes: Taste then My punishment and My warnings. And indeed, there came upon them in the morning an abiding punishment. Taste then My punishment and My warnings. And indeed, We have made the Quran easy for remembrance; is there anyone who will remember?" [al-Qamar: 33–40]. And God has mentioned Lot and his people in other places of the Quran, the mention of which has already passed along with the people of Noah, ʿĀd, and Thamūd.
