Arrival of the Emigrants from the Land of Abyssinia
Translation
✧ [The Messenger's joy at Jaʿfar's arrival] Ibn Hishām said: Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah mentioned on the authority of al-Ajlaḥ, on the authority of al-Shaʿbī: Jaʿfar b. Abī Ṭālib ؓ came to the Messenger of God ﷺ on the day of the conquest of Khaybar, and the Messenger of God ﷺ kissed him between the eyes and embraced him, and said: "I do not know which of the two brings me greater joy: the conquest of Khaybar or the arrival of Jaʿfar." As for what is related in this story that Jaʿfar, when he saw the Prophet ﷺ, walked with a hobbling gait—that is, he walked on one leg out of reverence for the Messenger of God ﷺ—and that the likes of the dancing bears made this a basis for their dancing: al-Bayhaqī said, and he related it by way of al-Thawrī from Abū al-Zubayr from Jābir: In its chain of transmission up to al-Thawrī there is someone unknown. I say: Even if it were authentic, this would not be a proof for the permissibility of imitating bears, mincing, and effeminacy in walking, which is contrary to the guidance of the Messenger of God ﷺ. For this was perhaps one of the customs of the Abyssinians in showing reverence to their leaders, like the striking of the jawq among the Turks and the like. Jaʿfar followed that custom and did it once, then abandoned it for the Sunnah of Islam. Where is this compared to jumping, mincing, swaying, and effeminacy?! And from God comes success.
