The Expedition of Khaybar

Translation

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gifting women and slaves from the spoils Ibn Isḥāq said: Some Muslim women attended Khaybar with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he gave them a small share from the fayʾ, but did not allot them a full share. Ibn Isḥāq, Imām Aḥmad, and Abū Dāwūd—both from his route—narrated from a woman of Ghifār (with kasrah on the ghayn) who said: I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ among women of Banū Ghifār, and we said: O Messenger of Allah, we wish to go out with you on this campaign of yours—while he was traveling to Khaybar—to treat the wounded and help the Muslims as much as we can. He said: "With the blessing of Allah Most High." She said: So we went out with him, and I was a young girl. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ seated me behind him on the rear pack of his saddle. She said: By Allah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ dismounted at dawn and made the camel kneel, and I got down from the rear pack of his saddle, and there was blood from me, and it was the first menstruation I had. She said: I drew myself close to the camel and felt ashamed. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw my state and saw the blood, he said: "What is the matter with you? Perhaps you have menstruated." She said: I said: Yes. He said: "Then tend to yourself, then take a vessel of water and put salt in it, then wash with it what blood has touched the rear pack, then return to your riding place." She said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ conquered Khaybar, he gave us a small share from the fayʾ. He took this necklace that you see on my neck and gave it to me, and hung it with his own hand on my neck. By Allah, it will never leave me. She said: It remained on her neck until she died, then she bequeathed that it be buried with her. She said: She would not purify herself from any menstruation except that she put salt in her purification water, and she bequeathed that it be put in her washing when she died. Imām Aḥmad said: Ḥasan b. Mūsā narrated to us, Rāfiʿ b. Salamah al-Ashjaʿī narrated to us, Ḥashraj b. Ziyād narrated to me, from his grandmother, the mother of his father, who said: We went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the expedition of Khaybar, and I was the sixth of six women. She said: The Prophet ﷺ learned that women were with him. She said: He sent for us and called us. She said: We saw anger in his face, and he said: "What brought you out, and by whose command did you come out?" We said: We came out to hand arrows and serve sawīq, and we have medicine for the wounded, and we spin wool to help with it in the path of Allah. He said: "Rise and depart." She said: When Allah granted him victory over Khaybar, he gave us shares like the shares of men. I said to her: O grandmother, what did he give you? She said: Dates. I say: He only gave them from the produce, but as for allotting them shares in the land like the shares of men, no. And Allah knows best. From ʿAbd Allāh b. Unays ؓ who said: I went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to Khaybar, and my wife was with me, and she was pregnant. She gave birth on the way, and I told the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said: "Soak dates for her, and when they are well soaked, mash them for her to drink." She did so and saw nothing she disliked. When we conquered Khaybar, he gave gifts to the women but did not allot them shares, and he gave gifts to my wife and the child who was born. Narrated by Muḥammad b. ʿUmar. Abū Dāwūd narrated from ʿUmayr, the freedman of Abū al-Lakhm (with a single dot, in the form of the active participle) ؓ who said: I attended Khaybar with my masters, and they spoke to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about me, and he ordered that I be given a sword, and I was dragging it. He was informed that I was a slave, and he ordered for me some odds and ends of baggage.
