✧ Mention of the Muslims who were martyred at Khaybar Aslam al-Ḥabashī the shepherd. Abū ʿUmar mentioned him, and Ibn al-Athīr objected that there is nothing in any of the accounts that his name was Aslam. Al-Ḥāfiẓ said: It is a reasonable objection. I say: Ibn Isḥāq in the Sīrah, in the transmission of Ibn Hishām, definitely stated that his name was Aslam al-Aswad the shepherd. It was mentioned earlier that his name was Aslam. Muḥammad b. ʿUmar said: His name was Yasār. Unayf – diminutive of anf (nose) – b. Ḥabīb b. ʿAmr b. ʿAwf. Unayf – like the previous one – b. Wāthila, with the three-letter (thāʾ) or the two-letter (tāʾ) form. Aws b. Jubayr – with jīm – al-Anṣārī, from the Banū ʿAmr b. ʿAwf. He was killed at the fortress of Nāʿim. Ibn Shāhīn mentioned it, and Abū Mūsā followed him: Aws b. Ḥabīb al-Anṣārī. Abū ʿUmar mentioned him, and it was said that he is the previous one. Aws b. Fāyidh – with two-letter (tāʾ) and pointed dhāl – al-Anṣārī. Abū ʿUmar mentioned him: Aws b. Fāʾid – with fāʾ and unpointed dāl – or Ibn Fātik or al-Fākih, from the Banū ʿAmr b. ʿAwf. Aws b. Qatādah al-Anṣārī. Bishr – with kasrah on the one-letter (bāʾ) and sukūn on the pointed letter – b. al-Barāʾ, with lightening of the rāʾ – b. Maʿrūr, with fatḥah on the mīm, sukūn on the unpointed ʿayn, and ḍammah on the first rāʾ. Thābit b. Ithlah – with kasrah on the hamzah and sukūn on the three-letter (thāʾ). Abū ʿUmar added a wāw at its beginning, but they did not agree with him. Thaqf – with three-letter (thāʾ) with fatḥah, then qāf with sukūn, then fāʾ. Muḥammad b. ʿUmar said: Thiqāf b. ʿAmr b. Sumayṭ al-Asadī. Al-Ḥārith b. Ḥāṭib. Ibn Isḥāq, Muḥammad b. ʿUmar, and Ibn Saʿd mentioned him, and they said: He witnessed Badr. Abū ʿUmar, al-Dhahabī, and al-Ḥāfiẓ did not deal with him because he was martyred at Khaybar. He is the brother of Thaʿlabah b. Ḥāṭib b. ʿUmar b. ʿUbayd al-Anṣārī al-Awsī. Rabīʿah b. Aktham b. Sakhbarah – with fatḥah on the unpointed sīn, sukūn on the pointed khāʾ, and with the one-letter (bāʾ) – b. ʿAmr al-Asadī. He was killed at al-Naṭāh; the Jew al-Ḥārith killed him. Rifāʿah b. Masrūḥ – with unpointed letters – al-Asadī, an ally of the Banū ʿAbd Shams. The Jew al-Ḥārith killed him. Salīm b. Thābit b. Waqsh al-Anṣārī al-Ashhalī. Ibn al-Kalbī and Abū Jaʿfar b. Jarīr al-Ṭabarī mentioned him. Ṭalḥah: Ibn Isḥāq mentioned him without giving his lineage, and many of the ḥuffāẓ did not ascertain his lineage. Muḥammad b. ʿUmar and Ibn Saʿd did not mention him. Abū Dharr, in al-Imlāʾ, said: He is Ṭalḥah b. Yaḥyā b. Isḥāq b. Mulayl. Abū ʿAlī al-Ghassānī – may God have mercy on him – said: Ibn Isḥāq was not informed of the name of this Ṭalḥah. I say: I have not seen any mention of this Ṭalḥah b. Yaḥyā b. Isḥāq in al-Iṣābah by al-Ḥāfiẓ, nor in al-Kāshif by al-Dhahabī. ʿĀmir b. al-Akwaʿ, and the name of al-Akwaʿ is Sinān b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Qushayr al-Aslamī, known as Ibn al-Akwaʿ, the paternal uncle of Salamah b. ʿAmr b. al-Akwaʿ. Al-Shaykhān and al-Bayhaqī narrated from Salamah b. al-Akwaʿ ؓ, who said: When the people lined up on the day of Khaybar, and the sword of ʿĀmir was short, he struck the leg of a Jew with it to hit him, but the tip of his sword rebounded and struck his own knee, and he died from it. When they returned, I heard some of the companions of Muḥammad, the Messenger of God ﷺ, saying: The deeds of ʿĀmir are void; he killed himself. So I came to the Messenger of God ﷺ weeping. The Messenger of God ﷺ said, when he saw me pale: What is the matter with you? I said: May my father and mother be your ransom, they claim that ʿĀmir's deeds are void. He said: "Who said that?" I said: So-and-so and so-and-so and Usayd b. al-Ḥuḍayr al-Anṣārī. He said: "The one who said that has lied. Indeed, he has two rewards" – and he joined his two fingers – "Indeed, he is a striver, a mujāhid. Few Arabs have walked – and in one wording: grown up – with the like of it." It occurred in one ḥadīth that he is the paternal uncle of Salamah b. ʿAmr b. al-Akwaʿ, and in another ḥadīth that he is his brother, and there is no contradiction between them, because he is his paternal uncle and his brother through suckling. ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Umayyah b. Wahb al-Asadī, by alliance. He was killed at al-Naṭāh. Muḥammad b. ʿUmar and Ibn Saʿd mentioned him, but Ibn Isḥāq did not mention him. ʿAbd Allāh b. Hubayb – with two one-letter (bāʾ) – diminutive – b. Uhayb, and it is said: Wuhayb b. Suḥaym al-Laythī, an ally of the Banū Asad. Ibn Isḥāq mentioned him in the transmission of al-Bakkāʾī, Jarīr b. Ḥāzim, and Yūnus b. Bukayr, but in his version it is ʿAbd Allāh b. so-and-so b. Wahb. Abū ʿUmar and a group likewise named him. Muḥammad b. ʿUmar mentioned that he and his brother ʿAbd al-Raḥmān were martyred at Uḥud. Al-Ḥāfiẓ said: The first is more correct. ʿAdī b. Murrah b. Surāqah al-Balawī – with fatḥah on the one-letter (bāʾ) and the lām – an ally of the Anṣār. He was stabbed between his two breasts with a spear and died from it. Muḥammad b. ʿUmar, Ibn Saʿd, and Abū ʿUmar mentioned him. ʿUrwah b. Murrah b. Surāqah al-Awsī: Abū ʿUmar mentioned him. ʿImārah b. ʿUqbah b. Ḥārithah al-Ghifārī. He was shot with an arrow. Ibn Isḥāq, Muḥammad b. ʿUmar, Ibn Saʿd, and Abū ʿUmar mentioned him. Al-Ḥāfiẓ criticized Abū ʿUmar regarding his being martyred at Khaybar with words indicating that he did not review the Sīrah at this point. There is no doubt about the correctness of what Abū ʿUmar mentioned. Fuḍayl b. al-Nuʿmān al-Anṣārī al-Salmī – with fatḥah on the sīn. Ibn Isḥāq mentioned him in the transmission of Yūnus, Ibn Salamah, and Ziyād. Muḥammad b. ʿUmar and Ibn Saʿd confirmed this here. Ibn Saʿd said in another place: Thus we found it in the expedition of Khaybar, and we searched for it in the genealogy of the Banū Salamah but did not find it. I think it is only an error, and he meant al-Ṭufayl b. al-Nuʿmān b. Khansāʾ b. Sinān. Al-Ṭufayl was mentioned by Ibn ʿUqbah among those who witnessed Khaybar. Bishr b. al-Mundhir b. Zanbar – with zāy and nūn and one-letter (bāʾ), in the pattern of Jaʿfar – b. Zayd b. Umayyah al-Anṣārī. Ibn Isḥāq mentioned him. Maḥmūd b. Maslamah: He was killed at the fortress of Nāʿim. A rock was thrown on him. It is said that Marḥab threw it, and it is said: Kinānah b. al-Rabīʿ, and perhaps they shared in the act. Midʿam al-Aswad, the freedman of the Messenger of God ﷺ. He was killed at Khaybar. He is the one who stole the cloak on that day, and the ḥadīth came that it would blaze with fire over him. Murrah b. Surāqah al-Anṣārī. Abū ʿUmar mentioned him, and Ibn al-Athīr objected that the one they mentioned who witnessed Khaybar was his son ʿUrwah b. Murrah. Al-Ḥāfiẓ said: There is nothing preventing both being included. I say: What supports Ibn al-Athīr's words is that Abū ʿUmar did not mention him in al-Durr; rather, he mentioned his son ʿUrwah. Masʿūd b. Rabīʿah – and it is said: Rabīʿ b. ʿAmr al-Qārī, with doubling – was among those martyred at Khaybar. Masʿūd b. Saʿd b. Qays al-Anṣārī al-Zuraqī: Ibn Isḥāq, Muḥammad b. ʿUmar, and Ibn Saʿd mentioned him. Abū Nuʿaym transmitted from Ibn ʿImārah that he mentioned him among them, but al-Wāqidī disagreed – end quote. Al-Ḥāfiẓ transmitted it and affirmed it. What is in the Maghāzī of al-Wāqidī is that he was martyred at Khaybar and Marḥab killed him. God knows best. Yasār: the name of the black shepherd. Muḥammad b. ʿUmar and Ibn Saʿd mentioned it, and Ibn Isḥāq named him Aslam. Abū Sufyān b. al-Ḥārith: Thus in a defective copy from al-Zuhrī, transmitted from the version of Yūnus from Ibn Isḥāq. I did not see it in al-Iṣābah. Abū Ḍayyāḥ – with ḍād with fatḥah, then two-letter (yāʾ) with doubling, then alif, then unpointed ḥāʾ – al-Anṣārī. His name is al-Nuʿmān. A man from Ashjaʿ was mentioned earlier among the Badrīs. Muḥammad b. ʿUmar and Ibn Saʿd mentioned him. Al-Nasāʾī and al-Bayhaqī narrated from Shaddād b. al-Hād ؓ that a man from the desert Arabs came to the Messenger of God ﷺ, believed, and followed him. He said: I will emigrate with you. The Prophet ﷺ entrusted him to one of his companions. When the expedition of Khaybar occurred, the Messenger of God ﷺ gained some booty and divided it among them, and he allotted a share for him. He gave his companions what was allotted for him, and he used to tend their mounts. When he came, they handed it to him. He said: What is this? They said: A share that the Messenger of God ﷺ allotted for you; take it. He brought it to the Messenger of God ﷺ and said: What is this? He said: "A share I allotted for you." He said: It is not for this that I follow you. Rather, I followed you so that I may be shot here – and he pointed to his throat – with an arrow, and then I die and enter Paradise. He said: "If you are truthful to God, He will be truthful to you." Then they rose to fight the enemy. He was brought to the Messenger of God ﷺ being carried, having been struck by an arrow where he had pointed. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Is it he?" They said: Yes. He said: "He was truthful to God, so He was truthful to him." The Prophet ﷺ shrouded him in his own cloak, then brought him forward and prayed over him. Among what appeared of his prayer was: "O God, this is Your servant and the son of Your servant. He went out as an emigrant in Your path and was killed as a martyr. I am a witness over him." Ninety-three men of the Jews were killed.
