The Expedition of Banu al-Mustaliq (al-Muraysi')
تَوَلِّي قَوْمِ ابْنِ أُبَيٍّ مُجَازَاتَهُ وَجَعَلَ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ إذَا أَحْدَثَ الْحَدَثَ كَانَ قَوْمُهُ هُمْ الَّذِينَ يُعَاتِبُونَهُ وَيَأْخُذُونَهُ وَيُعَنِّفُونَهُ؛ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ لِعُمَرِ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ، حِينَ بَلَغَهُ ذَلِكَ مِنْ شَأْنِهِمْ: كَيْفَ تَرَى يَا عُمَرُ؛ أَمَا وَاَللَّهِ لَوْ قَتَلْتُهُ يَوْمَ قُلْتَ لِي اُقْتُلْهُ، لَأُرْعِدَتْ لَهُ آنُفٌ، لَوْ أَمَرْتهَا الْيَوْمَ بِقَتْلِهِ لَقَتَلْتُهُ؛ قَالَ: قَالَ عُمَرُ: قَدْ وَاَللَّهِ عَلِمْتُ لَأَمْرُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَعْظَمُ بَرَكَةً مِنْ أَمْرِي.
Translation
✧ The Taking Over of Ibn Ubayy's People in Dealing with Him And after that, whenever he caused an incident, his people were the ones who would rebuke him, seize him, and reproach him harshly. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb when that matter of theirs reached him: 'How do you see it, O ʿUmar? By Allah, if I had killed him on the day you told me to kill him, noses would have trembled for him. If I ordered it today to kill him, I would kill him.' He said: ʿUmar said: 'By Allah, I have known that the command of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is greater in blessing than my command.'
