The Expedition of Dhi Qarad (the Expedition of al-Ghabah)
✧ The Going Out of the Messenger of God ﷺ in Pursuit of the Enemy Muhammad b. ʿUmar and Ibn Saʿd said: The Messenger of God ﷺ went out on the morning of Wednesday, riding, masked in iron armor. Ibn Hishām said: He appointed Ibn Umm Maktūm over Madinah. He said: And he left Saʿd b. ʿUbādah ؓ with three hundred of his people guarding Madinah. Ibn Isḥāq said: When the Messenger of God ﷺ and the Muslims passed by Ḥabīb, wrapped in the cloak of Abū Qatādah, they said, 'We belong to God and to Him we return,' and they said, 'Abū Qatādah has been killed.' The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'It is not Abū Qatādah, but it is a man killed by Abū Qatādah. He placed his cloak over him so that you would know that he is his companion.' Ibn Saʿd said, Salamah said: We caught up with the Messenger of God ﷺ and the horses at nightfall. Abū Qatādah ؓ said in his previous ḥadīth: The Messenger of God ﷺ and those with him from his companions approached, and when the army saw them they fled. He said: When they reached the site of the camp, there was Abū Qatādah's horse, hamstrung. A man from his companions said: O Messenger of God! Abū Qatādah's horse has been hamstrung. He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ stopped over it and said: 'Woe to your mother! Many an enemy you have had in war,' twice. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ and his companions came forward until when they reached the place where we had fought, there was Abū Qatādah—as they thought—wrapped in his clothes. A man from the companions said: O Messenger of God, Abū Qatādah has been martyred. He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'May God have mercy on Abū Qatādah. By the One who honored me with what He honored me, Abū Qatādah is on the tracks of the people, reciting rajaz.' Then Satan entered them, so they looked at my horse, hamstrung, and they looked at him wrapped in my clothes. He said: ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb and Abū Bakr ؓ went out running until the cloth was uncovered, and there was the face of Masʿadah. They said: 'God is greatest! God and His Messenger have spoken the truth. It is Masʿadah, O Messenger of God.' The people said 'God is greatest,' and it was not long before Abū Qatādah appeared to them, driving the milch-camels, The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'May your face prosper, O Abū Qatādah! Abū Qatādah is the master of the horsemen. May God bless you, O Abū Qatādah.' He said: I said: 'May my father and mother be your ransom, O Messenger of God. An arrow struck me, and by the One who honored you with what He honored you—and in your descendants and the descendants of your descendants'—and I think ʿIkrimah said, 'and the descendants of the descendants of your descendants'—'what is this on your face, O Abū Qatādah? I thought I had removed it.' He said: 'Come close to me, O Abū Qatādah.' He said: I came close to him. He said: He removed the arrowhead gently, then the Messenger of God ﷺ spat on it and placed his palm over it. By the One who honored Muḥammad ﷺ with prophethood, it never pained me for even an hour, and no wound ever afflicted me. Muḥammad b. ʿUmar and Ibn Saʿd related from Abū Qatādah, who said: When the Messenger of God ﷺ caught up with me, he said: 'O God, bless his hair and his skin,' and he said: 'May your face prosper.' I said: 'And your face, O Messenger of God.' He said: 'Did you kill Masʿadah?' I said: 'Yes.' He said: Abū Qatādah died at the age of seventy, and he looked like a boy of fifteen. The Arrival of Reinforcements to the Messenger of God ﷺ The alarm went out to Banū ʿAmr b. ʿAwf, and reinforcements came. The horses kept coming, and the men on foot and on camels, and the people took turns riding camels and donkeys until they reached the Messenger of God ﷺ at Dhū Qarad. Ibn Isḥāq said: They recovered ten milch-camels, among them a camel belonging to Abū Jahl, and the people escaped with ten. I say: This is a clear error. What is in the two Ṣaḥīḥs is that they recovered all the milch-camels. The wording of Muslim in his Ṣaḥīḥ, from Salamah: ('Until there was nothing of the milch-camels of the Messenger of God ﷺ that God had created but I had left it behind my back, and I seized from them thirty cloaks.'). The banner of the Messenger of God ﷺ was al-ʿIqāb, carried by Saʿd b. Zayd, and their battle cry was 'Amit! Amit!' The Messenger of God ﷺ performed the prayer of fear that day. Salamah said: My uncle caught up with me with a leather container of milk and a leather container of water, so I performed ablution and drank. Ibn Saʿd related from him, saying: We caught up with the Messenger of God ﷺ and the horses at nightfall. End. Salamah said: I came to the Messenger of God ﷺ while he was at the water from which I had driven them away, and there was the Messenger of God ﷺ having taken those camels and everything I had recovered from the polytheists, and every spear and cloak. And Bilāl had slaughtered a she-camel from the camels recovered from the people, and he roasted for the Messenger of God ﷺ from its hump and liver. I said: 'O Messenger of God! I have denied the people the water, and they are thirsty behind me. Choose a hundred men from the people and I will follow the people, and no one left to report will remain but I will kill him.' The Messenger of God ﷺ laughed until his molar teeth showed in the light of the fire, and said: 'O Salamah, do you think you would have done it?' I said: 'Yes, by the One who honored you.' He said: 'You have prevailed, so be lenient. They will be given an evening drink'—and in another wording, 'they will be entertained in the land of Ghaṭafān.' Then a man from Ghaṭafān came and said: 'So-and-so slaughtered a camel for them, and when they flayed its skin they saw dust. They said: The people have come to you, so they fled.' The Division of Spoils Among the Muslims Ibn Isḥāq said: The Messenger of God ﷺ divided among his companions one camel for every hundred. He ﷺ stayed at Dhū Qarad for a day and a night, awaiting news. In the ḥadīth of Salamah, they were five hundred. Ibn Isḥāq, Muḥammad b. ʿUmar, and Ibn Saʿd said: It is said seven hundred. And Saʿd b. ʿUbādah ؓ sent loads of dates and ten camels, which reached the Messenger of God ﷺ at Dhū Qarad. Salamah said: When morning came, the Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'The best of our horsemen today is Abū Qatādah, and the best of our footmen is Salamah.' Then the Messenger of God ﷺ gave me the share of a horseman and the share of a footman, and he combined them both for me. The Return of the Messenger of God ﷺ to Madinah Then the Messenger of God ﷺ mounted me behind him on al-ʿAḍbāʾ as we returned to Madinah. When we were near it, around mid-morning, and among the people was a man from the Anṣār who was never outrun, he began calling out: 'Is there anyone who will race? Let a man race me to Madinah.' He did that repeatedly, And I was behind the Messenger of God ﷺ, riding behind him. I said to him: 'Will you not honor a noble one, nor fear a chief?' He said: 'No, except the Messenger of God ﷺ.' I said: 'O Messenger of God, may my father and mother be your ransom, let me go so that I may race the man.' He said: 'If you wish.' I said: 'I will go.' So he dismounted from his riding beast, and I bent my leg and leapt from the she-camel. Then I held back for a height or two, meaning I saved my strength, then I ran until I caught up with him, and I struck him between his shoulder blades with my hand and said: 'By God, I have beaten you.' He laughed and said: 'By God, I do not think so.' Then I outran him until we entered Madinah. We stayed only three nights before we went out to Khaybar. Muḥammad b. ʿUmar and Ibn Saʿd said: The Messenger of God ﷺ returned to Madinah on Monday, having been absent for five nights. Al-Zubayr b. Bakkār related from Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm b. al-Ḥārith al-Taymī, who said: The Messenger of God ﷺ passed during the expedition of Dhū Qarad by a water called Bīsān. He asked about it, and it was said: 'Its name, O Messenger of God, is Bīsān—and it is salty.' He said: 'Rather, it is Nuʿmān, and it is good.' So the Messenger of God ﷺ changed the name—and God, Mighty and Majestic, changed the water—so Ṭalḥah bought it and gave it as charity.
