The Expedition of al-Khandaq (the Confederates)

Translation

✧ Mention of what the Muslims gained as spoils from the polytheists Muhammad b. ʿUmar said: Muhammad b. ʿUmar b. Rifāʿah b. Thaʿlabah b. Abī Mālik narrated to me from his father, from his grandfather, that Abū Sufyān said to Ḥuyayy b. Akhṭab: “Our fodder has run out, do you have any fodder?” Ḥuyayy said: “Yes,” and he spoke to Kaʿb b. Asad, who said: “Our wealth is your wealth, so do as you see fit. Let the people come with pack animals and carry what they want.” Ḥuyayy sent to them: “Send your pack animals to carry the fodder.” They sent twenty camels, and they loaded them with barley, dates, and straw, and set out with them to the Quraysh. When they were at Ṣafnah, intending to take the road through al-ʿAqīq, a group from Banū ʿAmr b. ʿAwf came upon them, while they were heading to their dwellings at midday, seeking them. They were twenty men, among them Abū Lubābah b. ʿAbd al-Mundhir, ʿUwaym b. Sāʿidah, and Maʿn b. ʿAdī. They had gone out for a deceased person of theirs who had died in their fortress, to bury him. They attacked the caravan, and the Qurayshites fought them for a while. Among them was Ḍirār b. al-Khaṭṭāb, who defended the caravan. Then he was wounded, and another was wounded, and they abandoned it. The Muslims overwhelmed them and turned back with it, driving it, until they came to Banū ʿAmr b. ʿAwf, and buried their deceased. Then they went with it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The people of the trench ate from it, and were relieved by that, and they ate it until it was exhausted. They slaughtered some of those camels at the trench, and what remained of them remained until they entered Madinah with it. When Ḍirār b. al-Khaṭṭāb returned, he told them the news. Abū Sufyān said: “Indeed Ḥuyayy is ill-omened. I think he has only brought ruin upon us. We no longer find anything to carry us when we return.”
