[ Ibn Hishām's Explanation of Some Unfamiliar Terms ] Ibn Hishām said: "sahm gharb" and "sahmun gharb," with and without construct, and it is the one whose origin is unknown—neither whence it came nor who shot it. Al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Dimyāṭī added in al-Ansāb: Qays b. Zayd b. ʿĀmir, ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Khālid, and Abū Sinān b. Ṣayfī b. Ṣakhr. Al-Ḥāfiẓ mentioned in al-Kunā that he witnessed Badr and was martyred at al-Khandaq. Of the polytheists, three were killed: ʿAmr b. ʿAbd Wudd, killed by ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib; Nawfal b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Mughīrah, killed by al-Zubayr b. al-ʿAwwām—and it is said: by ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib; and ʿUthmān b. Munabbih, who died at Makkah from an arrow-shot he received on the Day of al-Khandaq.
