The Expedition of al-Khandaq (the Confederates)

Translation

✧ Hypocrisy emerged from some of the hypocrites, and Muʿattib b. Qushayr said: “Muḥammad used to promise us that we would take the treasures of Kisrā and Caesar and that their wealth would be spent in the cause of Allah, yet today not one of us feels safe to go out to relieve himself. Allah and His Messenger have promised us nothing but delusion” [al-Aḥzāb 12]. And some men among those with him said: O people of Yathrib, there is no place for you, so return [al-Aḥzāb 13]. The Banū Qurayẓa resolved to raid Madinah by night. That reached the Muslims, and the matter became grave and the trial severe. Then Allah, exalted be He, restrained them from that when it reached them that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had sent Salamah b. Aslam b. Ḥarīsh al-Ashhalī with two hundred men, and Zayd b. Ḥārithah with three hundred, to guard Madinah and proclaim the takbīr. When morning came, they were safe. A group of the Banū Ḥārithah gathered and sent Aws b. Qayẓī—with the dotted yaʾ and the pointed ẓāʾ—to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: “O Messenger of Allah, our houses are exposed, and there is no abode among the dwellings of the Anṣār like ours. There is no one between us and Ghaṭafān to repel them from us. Permit us to return to our houses so that we may protect our children and women.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ granted them permission, and they rejoiced at that and prepared to depart. Muḥammad b. ʿUmar said: That reached Saʿd b. Muʿādh, and he came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: “O Messenger of Allah, do not permit them. By Allah, no hardship has ever befallen us and them but that they have acted thus.” Then he turned to them and said: “O Banū Ḥārithah, is this ever from you? No hardship has befallen us and you but that you have acted thus.” So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent them back.
