The Expedition of al-Khandaq (the Confederates)
فَصْلٌ ( مَوْقِفُ الْأَحْزَابِ بَعْدَ فَرَاغِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ مِنَ الْخَنْدَقِ ) قَالَ ابْنُ إِسْحَاقَ وَلَمَّا فَرَغَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مِنَ الْخَنْدَقِ، أَقْبَلَتْ قُرَيْشٌ حَتَّى نَزَلَتْ بِمُجْتَمَعِ الْأَسْيَالِ مِنْ رُومَةَ، بَيْنَ الْجُرُفِ وَزَغَابَةَ، فِي عَشَرَةِ آلَافٍ مِنْ أَحَابِيشِهِمْ وَمَنْ تَبِعَهُمْ مِنْ بَنِي كِنَانَةَ وَأَهْلِ تِهَامَةَ، وَأَقْبَلَتْ غَطَفَانُ وَمَنْ تَبِعَهُمْ مِنْ أَهْلِ نَجْدٍ، حَتَّى نَزَلُوا بِذَنَبِ نَقَمَى إِلَى جَانِبِ أُحُدٍ وَخَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَالْمُسْلِمُونَ، حَتَّى جَعَلُوا ظُهُورَهُمْ إِلَى سَلْعٍ فِي ثَلَاثَةِ آلَافٍ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ، فَضَرَبَ هُنَالِكَ عَسْكَرَهُ، وَالْخَنْدَقُ بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَ الْقَوْمِ وَأَمَرَ بِالذَّرَارِيِّ وَالنِّسَاءِ فَجُعِلُوا فَوْقَ الْآطَامِ. قَالَ ابْنُ هِشَامٍ وَاسْتَعْمَلَ عَلَى الْمَدِينَةِ ابْنَ أُمِّ مَكْتُومٍ قُلْتُ: وَهَذَا مَعْنَى قَوْلِهِ تَعَالَى: إِذْ جَاءُوكُمْ مِنْ فَوْقِكُمْ وَمِنْ أَسْفَلَ مِنْكُمْ وَإِذْ زَاغَتِ الْأَبْصَارُ وَبَلَغَتِ الْقُلُوبُ الْحَنَاجِرَ وَتَظُنُّونَ بِاللَّهِ الظُّنُونَا قَالَ الْبُخَارِيُّ: حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدَةُ، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ إِذْ جَاءُوكُمْ مِنْ فَوْقِكُمْ وَمِنْ أَسْفَلَ مِنْكُمْ وَإِذْ زَاغَتِ الْأَبْصَارُ قَالَتْ: ذَلِكَ يَوْمَ الْخَنْدَقِ.
Translation
✧ Section: The position of the Confederates after the Messenger of Allah finished the Trench Ibn Isḥāq said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished the Trench, Quraysh came and encamped at the meeting of the streams from Rūmah, between al-Jurf and Zaghābah, with ten thousand of their Aḥābīsh and those who followed them from Banū Kinānah and the people of Tihāmah. Ghaṭafān and those who followed them from the people of Najd came and encamped at Dhanab Naqamā, beside Uḥud. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the Muslims went out until they put their backs to Salʿ, with three thousand of the Muslims. He set up his camp there, with the Trench between him and the people, and he ordered the children and women to be placed in the strongholds. Ibn Hishām said: He appointed Ibn Umm Maktūm over Madinah. I say: This is the meaning of His saying, Exalted is He: "When they came against you from above you and from below you, and when the eyes turned away and the hearts reached the throats, and you were thinking about Allah [various] thoughts" [Qurʾān 33:10]. Al-Bukhārī said: ʿUthmān b. Abī Shaybah narrated to us; ʿAbdah narrated to us, from Hishām b. ʿUrwah, from his father, from ʿĀʾishah [regarding] "When they came against you from above you and from below you, and when the eyes turned away": She said: That was on the day of the Trench.
