Translation
✧ Mention of Some of the Poetry Recited Regarding This Expedition ʿAbd Allāh b. Rawāḥah ؓ said: We promised Abū Sufyān a Badr, but did not find for his appointed time any truth, nor was he faithful. I swear, had you kept the appointment with us and met us, You would have returned blameworthy and missed the allies. We left with it the severed limbs of ʿUtbah and his son, And ʿAmr Abū Jahl—we left him lying low. You disobeyed the Messenger of Allah—fie upon your religion And your evil affair that was misguided. Indeed I, even if you censure me, will say: May my family and my wealth be a ransom for the Messenger of Allah. We obeyed him, and did not reproach him among us for anything else— A blazing star for us in the darkness of night, a guide. [Ḥassān’s poetry about Badr] Ḥassān b. Thābit said about that: Leave the wide tracts of Syria—there has come between you and them A fierce warrior, like the mouths of pregnant camels kneeling at the watering place, In the hands of men who emigrated toward their Lord, And His true supporters, and the hands of the angels. If you take the road to the lowland from the interior of ʿĀlij, Then say to her: The way is not there. We stayed at al-Rass al-Nazūʿ for eight nights With a numerous, trailing army, broad in the resting places of its camels, With every bay horse whose chest is half its body, And lean, tall camels with high withers, You see the common ʿarfaj whose roots are scattered By the hoofs of the soles of the swift camels. If we meet in our wandering and our searching Furāt b. Ḥayyān, he will be a pledge of destruction, And if you meet Qays b. Imriʾ al-Qays after him, He will be added to a blackness whose color is the color of deep darkness. So convey to Abū Sufyān from me a message, For you are one of the noble, poor men. [Maʿbad and his poetry about a she-camel of the Messenger that plunged] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ remained waiting for Abū Sufyān. Maʿbad b. Abī Maʿbad al-Khuzāʿī passed by him, and he said, having seen the place of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while his she-camel plunged with him: She has fled from the company of Muḥammad, And from a ripe date of Yathrib, like the ʿanjad, She plunges upon the religion of her ancient forefather, She has made the water of Qudayd my appointed time, And the water of Ḍajnān for her at the forenoon of tomorrow. [Abū Sufyān’s poetry in reply to Ḥassān] Abū Sufyān b. al-Ḥārith b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib answered him, saying: O Ḥassān, indeed we, O son of the eater of the faghā, And your grandfather—we ambush the ravines in that way. We went out, and the wild asses do not escape among us, Even if they flee from us with a swift pursuit. When we set out from a resting place, you would think it A habitual gathering of the people of the season, jostling one another. You stayed at al-Rass al-Nazūʿ seeking us, And you leave us among the palm trees at the place of the presses. Upon the sown fields our horses and our riding camels walk, And whatever they tread upon, they press it to the hard, level ground. We stayed three nights between Salʿ and Fāriʿ With short-haired steeds and swift camels. You thought the fighting of the people beside their tents Was like your taking of lead by the spring, ratls of it. So do not send forth the swift horses, and say to them, In the manner of the protecting, self-restraining one: You were fortunate with them, while others were their rightful people— Horsemen from the sons of Fihr b. Mālik. For you are not in a migration if you mention it, Nor are you a devotee of the sacred ordinances of the religion. Ibn Hishām said: Some verses remain from it which we have omitted, because of the ugliness of the discordance of their rhymes. Abū Zayd al-Anṣārī recited to me this verse: We went out, and the wild asses do not escape among us, And the verse after it belongs to Ḥassān b. Thābit in his saying: Leave the wide tracts of Syria—there has come between you and them, And he recited to me for him among them his verse: So convey to Abū Sufyān.
