Translation
✧ The Expedition of Badr al-Akhirah In Shaʿbān of the year four, and it was said: the expedition of Badr al-Mawʿid was at the crescent of Dhū al-Qiʿdah. Ibn Isḥāq said: When the Messenger of God ﷺ returned to Madinah from the expedition of Dhāt al-Riqāʿ, he stayed there for the remainder of Jumādā al-Ūlā, Jumādā al-Ākhirah, and Rajab. Then he set out in Shaʿbān to Badr for the appointment with Abū Sufyān, which is Badr al-Mawʿid, the one they had promised each other after Uḥud. It was also called the Expedition of al-Sawīq. In al-Bidāyah, al-Wāqidī said: The Messenger of God ﷺ set out to it at the beginning of Dhū al-Qiʿdah, meaning of the year four. The correct view is the saying of Ibn Isḥāq that it was in Shaʿbān of that year. Mūsā b. ʿUqbah agreed that it was in Shaʿbān, but he said it was in the year three. This is an error, for they had promised each other this after Uḥud, and Uḥud was in Shawwāl of the year three. Its reason was that when Abū Sufyān b. Ḥarb wanted to depart on the day of Uḥud, he called out: An appointment between us and you at Badr al-Ṣafrāʾ, at the head of the year, where we shall meet and fight. The Messenger of God ﷺ said to ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb: Say: Yes, if God wills. The people then separated on that basis, and Quraysh returned and informed those who were with them of the appointment. Badr al-Ṣafrāʾ was a gathering place for the Arabs and a market that was held from the crescent of Dhū al-Qiʿdah until eight nights had passed of it. When eight nights had passed, the people dispersed to their lands.
