The Expedition of Dhat al-Riqa'
قَالَ الْوَاقِدِيُّ: وَكَانَ جَابِرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ يَقُولُ: بَيْنَا أَنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذْ جَاءَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ بِفَرْخٍ طَائِرٍ، وَرَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَنْظُرُ إِلَيْهِ، فَأَقْبَلَ إِلَيْهِ أَبَوَاهُ أَوْ أَحَدُهُمَا، حَتَّى طَرَحَ نَفْسَهُ فِي يَدَيِ الَّذِي أَخَذَ فَرْخَهُ، فَرَأَيْتُ أَنَّ النَّاسَ عَجِبُوا مِنْ ذَلِكَ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: أَتَعْجَبُونَ مِنْ هَذَا الطَّائِرِ ؟ ! أَخَذْتُمْ فَرْخَهُ فَطَرَحَ نَفْسَهُ رَحْمَةً لِفَرْخِهِ، فَوَاللَّهِ لَرَبُّكُمْ أَرْحَمُ بِكُمْ مِنْ هَذَا الطَّائِرِ بِفَرْخِهِ
Translation
✧ Al-Wāqidī said: Jābir b. ʿAbd Allāh used to say: While I was with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, a man from his companions came with a fledgling of a bird, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was looking at it. Then its two parents, or one of them, came until it cast itself into the hands of the one who had taken its fledgling. I saw that the people were amazed at that. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Do you marvel at this bird?! You took its fledgling, and it cast itself out of mercy for its fledgling. By Allah, your Lord is more merciful to you than this bird is to its fledgling.”
