✧ The story of the two trees, and the story of the lightening of the torment from two dead men, and the story of the springing forth of water from between his fingers, and the story of the beast that the sea cast up when the Muslims complained of hunger. Muslim, Abū Nuʿaym, and al-Bayhaqī narrated: On the authority of Jābir ؓ who said: We traveled with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the expedition of Dhāt al-Riqāʿ, until we halted in a wide valley. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went to relieve himself, and I followed him with a waterskin of water. He looked but found nothing to screen himself with, and behold there were two trees on the bank of the valley. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went to one of them, took hold of one of its branches, and said: “Yield to me by the permission of Allah Most High.” It yielded to him like a camel with a nose-rein that complies with its driver, until he came to the other tree. He took hold of one of its branches and said: “Yield to me by the permission of Allah Most High.” It yielded with him likewise, until when he was halfway between the two of them, he joined them together, meaning he brought them together, and said: “Close up upon me by the permission of Allah Most High.” They closed up. Jābir said: I went out running for fear that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ might sense my footstep and move farther away. I sat talking to myself, and a glance came from me, and behold I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ approaching, and the two trees had separated, and each one of them stood on its trunk. I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ pause for a moment and gesture with his head: “Like this, right and left.” Then he came forward. When he reached me he said: “O Jābir! Did you see my station?” I said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah. The story of the lightening of the torment from two dead men He said: “Then go to the two trees and cut from each one of them a branch and bring them, until when you stand in my station, cast one branch on your right and one branch on your left.” Jābir said: I arose, took a stone, broke it and sharpened it, and it slipped for me. Then I went to the two trees and cut from each one of them a branch. Then I came dragging them until when I stood in the station of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ I cast one branch on my right and one on my left. Then I caught up with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: I have done it, O Messenger of Allah, so what is that for? He said: “I passed by two graves whose occupants are being tormented, and I wished by my intercession to give them relief for as long as the two twigs remain fresh.” Then we came to the camp. The story of the springing forth of water from between his fingers Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “O Jābir, call for water for ablution.” So I called: “Is there any water for ablution? Is there any water for ablution?” I said: O Messenger of Allah, I have not found a drop in the caravan. There was a man of the Anṣār who cooled water for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in some old leather waterskins of his hung on a trellis of palm stalks. He said: “Go to So-and-so the Anṣārī, and see whether there is anything in his waterskins.” So I went to him and looked, and found not a drop of water in them except a drop in the mouth of one of the waterskins. If I were to pour it out, the parched earth would drink it. I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him. He said: “Go and bring it to me.” So I brought it to him. He took it in his hand and began to say something I do not know what it was, and he squeezed it with his hand. Then he gave it to me and said: “O Jābir, call for a large bowl.” I said: “O bowl of the caravan!” I brought it carried by men and placed it before him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ placed his hand in it like this, spreading it in the bowl, and parted his fingers. Then he placed the waterskin in the bottom of the bowl and said: “Take it, O Jābir, and pour upon me, and say: In the name of Allah.” I saw the water gushing from between his fingers, and the bowl overflowed and swirled until it was full. He said: “O Jābir, call whoever has need of water.” The people came and drew water. Until they drank their fill. I said: Is there anyone left who has need? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ raised his hand from the bowl, and it was full. The story of the beast that the sea cast up The people complained of hunger, and he said: “Perhaps Allah will feed you from the shore of the sea.” We came to the shore of the sea, and it cast up a beast. We lit a fire on its side and roasted and ate and cooked and were satisfied. Jābir said: I and So-and-so and So-and-so, until he counted five, entered into the socket of its eye, and no one saw us until we came out. We took one of its ribs, bent it into an arch, then called for the largest man in the caravan and the largest camel, and he entered beneath it without lowering his head.
