The Expulsion of Banu al-Nadir in the Year Four
ذَكَرَ إِرْسَالَهُ ﷺ مُحَمَّدَ بْنَ مَسْلَمَةَ إِلَيْهِمْ وَاعْتِرَافَهُمْ بِرِسَالَتِهِ لَمَّا جَاءَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَسْلَمَةَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ: «اذْهَبْ إِلَى يَهُودِ بَنِي النَّضِيرِ فَقُلْ لَهُمْ: إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ، أَرْسَلَنِي إِلَيْكُمْ أَنِ اخْرُجُوا مِنْ بَلَدِي» . فَلَمَّا جَاءَهُمْ قَالَ: إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَرْسَلَنِي إِلَيْكُمْ بِرِسَالَةٍ، وَلَسْتُ أَذْكُرُهَا لَكُمْ حَتَّى أُعَرِّفَكُمْ بِشَيْءٍ تَعْرِفُونَهُ فِي مَجْلِسِكُمْ، فَقَالُوا: مَا هُوَ ؟ قَالَ: أَنْشُدُكُمْ بِالتَّوْرَاةِ، الَّتِي أَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ عَلَى مُوسَى: هَلْ تَعْلَمُونَ أَنِّي جِئْتُكُمْ قَبْلَ أَنْ يُبْعَثَ مُحَمَّدٌ وَبَيْنَكُمُ التَّوْرَاةُ فَقُلْتُمْ لِي فِي مَجْلِسِكُمْ هَذَا: يَا ابْنَ مَسْلَمَةَ إِنْ شِئْتَ أَنْ نُغَدِّيَكَ غَدَّيْنَاكَ، وَإِنْ شِئْتَ أَنْ نُهَوِّدَكَ هَوَّدْنَاكَ، فَقُلْتُ لَكُمْ: بَلْ غَدُّونِي وَلَا تُهَوِّدُونِي، فَإِنِّي وَاللَّهِ لَا أَتَهَوَّدُ أَبَدًا، فَغَدَّيْتُمُونِي فِي صَحْفَةٍ لَكُمْ، وَقُلْتُمْ لِي: مَا يَمْنَعُكَ مِنْ دِينِنَا إِلَّا أَنَّهُ دِينُ يَهُودَ، كَأَنَّكَ تُرِيدُ الْحَنِيفِيَّةَ الَّتِي سَمِعْتَ بِهَا، أَمَّا إِنَّ أَبَا عَامِرٍ الرَّاهِبَ لَيْسَ بِصَاحِبِهَا، أَتَاكُمْ صَاحِبُهَا الضَّحُوكُ الْقَتَّالُ فِي عَيْنَيْهِ حُمْرَةٌ، وَيَأْتِي مِنْ قِبَلِ الْيَمَنِ، يَرْكَبُ الْبَعِيرَ، وَيَلْبَسُ الشَّمْلَةَ، وَيَجْتَزِئُ بِالْكِسْرَةِ، وَسَيْفُهُ عَلَى عَاتِقِهِ، يَنْطِقُ بِالْحِكْمَةِ كَأَنَّهُ وَشِيجَتُكُمْ هَذِهِ، وَاللَّهِ لِيَكُونَنَّ فِي قَرْيَتِكُمْ هَذِهِ سَلْبٌ، وَقَتْلٌ، وَمَثْلٌ، قَالُوا: اللَّهُمَّ نَعَمْ، قَدْ قُلْنَا ذَلِكَ وَلَيْسَ بِهِ. قَالَ: قَدْ فَرَغْتَ، إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَرْسَلَنِي إِلَيْكُمْ يَقُولُ لَكُمْ: «إِنَّكُمْ قَدْ نَقَضْتُمُ الْعَهْدَ الَّذِي جَعَلْتُ لَكُمْ، بِمَا هَمَمْتُمْ بِهِ مِنَ الْغَدْرِ بِي». وَأَخْبَرَهُمْ بِمَا كَانُوا هَمُّوا بِهِ وَظُهُورِ عَمْرِو بْنِ جَحَّاشٍ عَلَى الْبَيْتِ لِيَطْرَحَ الصَّخْرَةَ، فَأُسْكِتُوا، فَلَمْ يَقُولُوا حَرْفًا. وَيَقُولُ: «اخْرُجُوا مِنْ بَلَدِي وَقَدْ أَجَّلْتُكُمْ عَشْرًا، فَمَنْ رُئِيَ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ ضَرَبْتُ عُنُقَهُ»، قَالُوا: يَا مُحَمَّدُ، مَا كُنَّا نَرَى أَنْ يَأْتِيَ بِهَذَا رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْأَوْسِ. قَالَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَسْلَمَةَ: تَغَيَّرَتِ الْقُلُوبُ. فَمَكَثُوا عَلَى ذَلِكَ أَيَّامًا يَتَجَهَّزُونَ، وَأَرْسَلُوا إِلَى ظَهْرِهِمْ بِذِي الْجَدْرِ يَجْلِبُ لَهُمْ، وَتَكَارَوْا مِنْ نَاسٍ مِنْ أَشْجَعَ [إِبِلًا] وَجَدُّوا فِي الْجِهَازِ.
Translation
✧ His ﷺ sending Muḥammad b. Maslamah to them and their acknowledgment of his message When Muḥammad b. Maslamah, the Messenger of Allah's ﷺ envoy, came, he said: "Go to the Jews of Banū al-Naḍīr and say to them: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has sent me to you that you depart from my land." When he came to them, he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has sent me to you with a message, and I will not mention it to you until I make known to you something you recognize in your assembly. They said: What is it? He said: I adjure you by the Torah, which Allah sent down upon Moses: Do you know that I came to you before Muḥammad was sent, while the Torah was among you, and you said to me in this assembly of yours: O son of Maslamah, if you wish we will give you a morning meal, and if you wish we will make you a Jew. I said to you: Rather give me a morning meal and do not make me a Jew, for I, by Allah, will never become a Jew. So you gave me a morning meal in a dish of yours, and you said to me: Nothing prevents you from our religion except that it is the religion of the Jews, as if you desire the ḥanīfiyyah which you have heard of. Now Abū ʿĀmir the monk is not its adherent. Its adherent will come to you, one who laughs and fights, with redness in his eyes, and he will come from the direction of Yemen, riding the camel, wearing the shamlah, content with a piece of bread, his sword on his shoulder, speaking with wisdom as if he were this branch of yours. By Allah, there will surely be in this village of yours plunder, killing, and punishment. They said: O Allah, yes, we said that, and it is not he. He said: You have finished. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has sent me to you saying to you: "You have broken the covenant which I made for you, by what you intended of treachery against me." And he informed them of what they had intended and of ʿAmr b. Jaḥḥāsh's appearance over the house to cast the rock, so they fell silent and did not say a word. And he says: "Depart from my land, and I have granted you ten days. Whoever is seen after that, I will strike his neck." They said: O Muḥammad, we did not think that a man from the Aws would bring this. Muḥammad b. Maslamah said: The hearts changed. They remained upon that for days preparing, and they sent to their rear at Dhū al-Jadr to bring them provisions, and they hired camels from people of Ashjaʿ and set about equipping themselves.
