The Expulsion of Banu al-Nadir in the Year Four
Translation
✧ [The Messenger’s going out to Banū al-Naḍīr to seek their help with the blood money for the slain of Banū ʿĀmir and their intention to betray him] Ibn Isḥāq said: Then the Messenger of God ﷺ went out to Banū al-Naḍīr to seek their help with the blood money for those two slain men of Banū ʿĀmir whom ʿAmr b. Umayyah al-Ḍamrī had killed, on account of the protection that the Messenger of God ﷺ had granted them, as Yazīd b. Rūmān narrated to me. There was a pact and alliance between Banū al-Naḍīr and Banū ʿĀmir. When the Messenger of God ﷺ came to them seeking their help with the blood money for those two slain men, they said: Yes, O Abū al-Qāsim, we shall help you with whatever you wish, of that for which you have sought our help. Then some of them conferred privately with one another and said: You will never find the man in a situation like this one of his—and the Messenger of God ﷺ was sitting beside a wall of their houses—so who is a man who can climb up on top of this house and cast a rock down upon him, and thus relieve us of him? ʿAmr b. Jaḥḥāsh b. Kaʿb, one of them, volunteered for that and said: I shall do it. So he climbed up to cast a rock down upon him as he had said, while the Messenger of God ﷺ was among a group of his companions, among them Abū Bakr, ʿUmar, and ʿAlī, may God’s good pleasure be upon them. [The disclosure of their intention to the Messenger and his preparation to fight them] Then the news came to the Messenger of God ﷺ from heaven of what the people intended, so he rose and departed, returning to Madinah. When the Prophet ﷺ delayed, his companions rose to look for him. They met a man coming from Madinah and asked him about him; he said: I saw him entering Madinah. So the companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ came forward until they reached him ﷺ, and he informed them of the news, of what the Jews had intended of treachery against him. The Messenger of God ﷺ commanded making ready to fight them and marching against them.
