The Detachment of al-Mundhir b. 'Amr to Bi'r Ma'unah (the Detachment of the Qur'an Reciters)

Translation
✧ [Ḥassān’s poetry inciting the Banū Abī Barāʾ against ʿĀmir] Ibn Isḥāq said: Ḥassān b. Thābit said, inciting the Banū Abī Barāʾ against ʿĀmir b. al-Ṭufayl: Banū Umm al-Banīn, were you not startled, while you are among the forelocks of the people of Najd, by ʿĀmir’s mockery of Abū Barāʾ, to violate his protection, though no error is like a deliberate act? Indeed, convey to Rabīʿa, possessor of noble deeds: what have you brought about in the vicissitudes of time after me? Your father is the father of wars, Abū Barāʾ, and your maternal uncle is the glorious Ḥakam b. Saʿd. [The killing of Ibn Warqāʾ and Ibn Rawāḥa’s elegy for him] Anas b. ʿAbbās al-Sulamī, who was the maternal uncle of Ṭuʿayma b. ʿAdī b. Nawfal, and who on that day killed Nāfiʿ b. Budayl b. Warqāʾ al-Khuzāʿī, said: I left Ibn Warqāʾ al-Khuzāʿī lying prostrate in a battlefield over which whirlwinds scatter dust. I remembered Abū al-Rayyān when I saw him, and I was certain that I would then seek vengeance. Abū al-Rayyān is Ṭuʿayma b. ʿAdī. And ʿAbd Allāh b. Rawāḥa said, weeping for Nāfiʿ b. Budayl b. Warqāʾ: May God have mercy on Nāfiʿ b. Budayl, the mercy of one seeking the reward of jihād, patient, truthful, faithful; when the people spoke much, he spoke the word of right guidance. [Ḥassān’s poetry mourning the slain of Biʾr Maʿūnah] Ḥassān b. Thābit said, mourning the slain of Biʾr Maʿūnah, singling out al-Mundhir b. ʿAmr: For the slain of Maʿūnah, then weep profusely, with tears of the eye, pouring forth without scantiness, for the steeds of the Messenger on the morning they met their fates, and they met them by decree. Destruction befell them through a pact of a people whose rope’s covenant was betrayed by treachery. Alas, my grief for Mundhir when he turned away and pressed on into his death with steadfastness. How many were struck down on that morning, among white-complexioned noble ones from the flower of ʿAmr. Ibn Hishām said: Abū Zayd al-Anṣārī recited to me one more verse at the end of it. [Kaʿb’s poetry on the day of Biʾr Maʿūnah] He also recited to me from Kaʿb b. Mālik on the day of Biʾr Maʿūnah, reproaching the Banū Jaʿfar b. Kilāb: You abandoned your neighbor to the Banū Sulaym, out of fear of their war, in impotence and abasement. Had a rope been extended from ʿUqayl, he would have stretched with its rope a firm rope. Or the Qurāṭāʾ—they did not hand him over, and of old they did not keep faith when you do not fulfill.
