The Detachment of al-Raji'

Translation

✧ Account of the killing of Zayd b. al-Dathina ؓ Ibn Isḥāq and Ibn Saʿd said: Ṣafwān b. Umayya—who later embraced Islam—bought Zayd in order to kill him in retaliation for his father Umayya b. Khalaf, and he detained him with some people of Banū Jumaḥ, or, as is said, with his slave Nasṭās. When the sacred months had elapsed, Ṣafwān sent him with his slave Nasṭās to al-Tanʿīm and brought him out of the sanctuary to kill him. A group of Quraysh gathered, among them Abū Sufyān b. Ḥarb. When Abū Sufyān came forward to kill him, he said: “I adjure you by God, O Zayd, would you like Muḥammad to be with us now in your place, so that we strike his neck, while you are with your family?” He said: “By God, I would not like Muḥammad now, in the place where he is, to be pricked by a thorn that hurts him, while I sit with my family.” Abū Sufyān said: “I have never seen among people anyone who loves anyone as the companions of Muḥammad love Muḥammad.” Then Nasṭās killed him, and later embraced Islam. Ibn ʿUqba mentioned that Zayd and Khubayb were killed on the same day, and that the Messenger of God ﷺ heard on the day they were killed and said: “And upon you both be peace.”
