The Detachment of al-Raji'
Translation
✧ Khubayb, Zayd, and ʿAbd Allāh climbed the mountain — that being at the time ʿĀṣim and his companions were killed — but they could not get to them until they gave them a covenant and a pact, so they came down to them. When they had secured them, they loosened the strings of their bows and bound them with them. Then ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāriq said: “This is the first treachery. By God, I will not accompany you; in these slain I have an example to follow.” So they dragged him and struggled with him to make him accompany them, but he would not, and they killed him. Thus it is in the Ṣaḥīḥ. According to Ibn Isḥāq: As for Zayd b. al-Dathina, Khubayb b. ʿAdī, and ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāriq, they yielded and softened and desired life, so they gave themselves up, and they captured them. Then they set out with them to Makkah to sell them there, until when they were at al-Ẓahrān, ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāriq pulled his hand out of the rope, then took his sword and lagged behind the people, so they stoned him until they killed him, and they buried him at al-Ẓahrān. They went on with Zayd and Khubayb and sold them in Makkah. He said: Those who sold them were Zuhayr and Jāmiʿ, the two Hudhalīs. Ibn Hishām said: They sold them for two captives from Hudhayl [who were in Makkah]. Abū Hurayrah said, as in the Ṣaḥīḥ: “Banū al-Ḥārith b. ʿĀmir b. Nawfal bought Khubayb.” Ibn ʿUqbah said: “In the purchase of Khubayb, they claimed, there shared Abū Ihāb b. ʿAzīz, ʿIkrimah b. Abī Jahl, al-Akhnas b. Shurayq, ʿUbaydah b. Ḥakīm b. al-Awqaṣ, Umayyah b. Abī ʿUtbah, Ṣafwān b. Umayyah, and Banū al-Ḥaḍramī — they being the sons of those killed among the polytheists on the day of Badr.” Ibn Isḥāq said: Khubayb was purchased by Ḥujayr b. Abī Ihāb al-Tamīmī, confederate of Banū Nawfal, for ʿUqbah b. al-Ḥārith b. ʿĀmir b. Nawfal, since Abū Ihāb was the maternal brother of al-Ḥārith b. ʿĀmir, for the killing of his father. Ibn Hishām said: Al-Ḥārith b. ʿĀmir was the maternal uncle of Abū Ihāb, and Abū Ihāb was one of Banū Usayyid b. ʿAmr b. Tamīm; and it is said: one of Banū ʿUdas b. Zayd b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Dārim, from Banū Tamīm. Muḥammad b. ʿUmar said: The first was sold for a mithqāl of gold, and it is said for fifty farīḍahs, and the second was sold for fifty farīḍahs, and it is said: People from Quraysh shared in him. They entered with the two of them in a sacred month, in Dhū al-Qaʿdah, and kept them imprisoned until the sacred months had passed.
