The Detachment of al-Raji'
سَرِيَّةُ الرَّجِيعِ كَانَتْ فِي سَنَةِ ثَلَاثٍ مِنَ الْهِجْرَةِ وَذَلِكَ أَنَّ قَوْمًا مِنْ عَضَلَ وَالْقَارَةِ أَتَوْا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَطَلَبُوا مِنْهُ أُنَاسًا مِنَ الصَّحَابَةِ يَدْعُونَ أَقْوَامَهُمْ إِلَى الْإِسْلَامِ، فَفَعَلُوا ذَلِكَ وَذَكَرُوا إِسْلَامًا فِي قَوْمِهِمْ فَأَرْسَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَعَهُمْ عَشَرَةَ نَفَرٍ، وَقِيلَ: غَيْرُ ذَلِكَ، فِيهِمْ عَاصِمُ بْنُ ثَابِتٍ، وَخُبَيْبُ بْنُ عَدِيٍّ وَزَيْدُ بْنُ الدَّثِنَةِ، حَتَّى إِذَا كَانُوا فِي الطَّرِيقِ غَدَرُوا بِهِمْ فَاسْتَصْرَخُوا عَلَيْهِمْ، وَلَجَأَ عَاصِمٌ وَأَصْحَابُهُ إِلَى مُرْتَفَعٍ مِنَ الْأَرْضِ فَأَحَاطَ بِهِمُ الْقَوْمُ وَرَمَوْهُمْ بِالنَّبْلِ وَطَلَبُوا أَنْ يَنْزِلُوا إِلَيْهِ وَيَسْتَأْسِرُوا فَأَبَى عَاصِمٌ أَنْ يَنْزِلَ فِي ذِمَّةِ أَوْ عَهْدِ كَافِرٍ وَدَعَا اللَّهَ أَنْ يَحْمِيَ لَحْمَهُ فَقَاتَلَ حَتَّى قُتِلَ وَحَمَى اللَّهُ لَحْمَهُ بِالدَّبْرِ فَلَمْ يَقْدِرْ عَلَيْهِ أَحَدٌ مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ وَقُتِلَ أَصْحَابُهُ إِلَّا خُبَيْبَ بْنَ عَدِيٍّ وَزَيْدَ بْنَ الدَّثِنَةِ أَخَذَهُمُ الْقَوْمُ وَبَاعُوهُمْ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ فَقَتَلَتْهُمَا قُرَيْشٌ بِمَنْ قُتِلَ مِنْهُمْ فِي بَدْرٍ وَقَدْ أَظْهَرَا عِنْدَ قَتْلِهِمَا مِنْ مَعَانِي الْوَفَاءِ وَالْحُبِّ لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَالصَّبْرِ وَالثَّبَاتِ فِي دِينِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ.
Translation
✧ The Detachment of al-Raji' It was in the year three of the Hijrah. That is, a group from ʿAḍal and al-Qārah came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and requested from him some people among the Companions who would call their people to Islam. They did that and mentioned Islam among their people. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent with them ten individuals—and it is said: something other than that—among them ʿĀṣim b. Thābit, Khubayb b. ʿAdī, and Zayd b. al-Dathinah. When they were on the way, they betrayed them and called for help against them. ʿĀṣim and his companions took refuge on elevated ground, and the people surrounded them and shot at them with arrows. They asked them to come down to them and surrender as captives. ʿĀṣim refused to come down under the protection or covenant of an unbeliever, and he called upon Allah to protect his flesh. He fought until he was killed, and Allah protected his flesh with hornets, so none of the polytheists could reach it. His companions were killed except Khubayb b. ʿAdī and Zayd b. al-Dathinah. The people took them and sold them to Quraysh, and Quraysh killed them in retaliation for those of them who were killed at Badr. At their killing, they displayed qualities of loyalty and love for the Prophet ﷺ, and patience and steadfastness in the religion of Allah, Mighty and Majestic.
