Translation
✧ The Detachment of al-Raji' It took place in Safar of the year three. Al-Waqidi said: It took place in Safar—that is, year four. He said: Al-Raji' is seven miles from 'Usfan. There is disagreement about its cause and the number of its men. Abu Hurayrah ؓ, as in the Sahih, and 'Urwah, and Ibn 'Uqbah, as al-Bayhaqi narrated from them, said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent ten men as scouts to Makkah to bring him news of Quraysh. Ibn Sa'd asserted that they were ten and named seven of them: 1- 'Asim b. Thabit b. Abi al-Aqlah. 2- Marthad b. Abi Marthad, Kannaz b. [Husayn b. Yarbu' b. Tarif al-Ghanawi]. 3- 'Abd Allah b. Tariq [an ally of Banu Zafar]. 4- Khubayb b. 'Adi [one of Banu Jahjabi b. Kulfah b. 'Amr b. 'Awf]. 5- Zayd b. al-Dathinah [b. Mu'awiyah, brother of Banu Bayadah b. 'Amr b. Zurayq]. 6- Khalid b. al-Bukayr [al-Laythi]. 7- Mu'attib b. 'Ubayd, and it is said: ibn 'Awf. Muhammad b. 'Umar, may Allah have mercy on him, mentioned them and then said: "It is said they were ten." End. It appears that the three were followers, so no care was taken to name them. Ibn Ishaq mentioned that they were six; they are [those we have mentioned] except Mu'attib. Ibn 'Uqbah, Ibn Ishaq, Muhammad b. 'Umar, Ibn Sa'd, and others mentioned them, and the wording of Muhammad b. 'Umar is the best in composition. He said, quoting from his shaykhs: "Banu Lihyan of Hudhayl, after the killing of Sufyan [b. Khalid] b. Nubayh al-Hudhali, walked to 'Adal and al-Qarah—two tribes—and made for them appointed shares if they would come to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and speak with him so that he would send out with them a group of his companions who would call them to Islam. They said: We will kill whomever we wish and take them to Quraysh in Makkah, and obtain a price for them. For nothing is dearer to them than to be brought one of Muhammad's companions, to mutilate him and kill him in revenge for those of them killed at Badr. Seven men of 'Adal and al-Qarah [two tribes, to Khuzaymah] came professing Islam. They said: (O Messenger of Allah, among us Islam is widespread, so send with us a group of your companions to teach us the Qur'an and instruct us in Islam). So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent seven men with them, and appointed over them Marthad b. Abi Marthad, and it is said: 'Asim b. Thabit b. Abi al-Aqlah. I say: That is the sound report, for al-Bukhari narrated it from Abu Hurayrah ؓ. [The lineage of 'Adal and al-Qarrah] Ibn Hisham said: 'Adal and al-Qarrah are from al-Hawn b. Khuzaymah b. Mudrikah. Ibn Hisham said: It is also said: al-Hun, with a damma on the ha'.
