The Expedition of Uḥud
[ مَقْتَلُ أَبِي عَزَّةَ وَمُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ ] قَالَ أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ: وَأَخَذَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فِي جِهَةِ ذَلِكَ، قَبْلَ رُجُوعِهِ إلَى الْمَدِينَةِ، مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنَ الْمُغِيرَةِ بْنَ أَبِي الْعَاصِ بْنِ أُمَيَّةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ شَمْسٍ، وَهُوَ جَدُّ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ مَرْوَانَ، أَبُو أُمِّهِ عَائِشَةَ بِنْتِ مُعَاوِيَةَ، وَأَبَا عَزَّةَ الْجُمَحِيَّ، وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَسَرَهُ بِبَدْرِ، ثُمَّ مَنَّ عَلَيْهِ، فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، أَقِلْنِي، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: وَاَللَّهِ لَا تَمْسَحْ عَارِضَيْكَ بِمَكَّةَ بَعْدَهَا وَتَقُولُ: خَدَعْتُ مُحَمَّدًا مَرَّتَيْنِ، اضْرِبْ عُنُقَهُ يَا زُبَيْرُ. فَضَرَبَ عُنُقَهُ قَالَ ابْنُ هِشَامٍ: وَبَلَغَنِي عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ أَنَّهُ قَالَ: قَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: إنَّ الْمُؤْمِنَ لَا يُلْدَغُ مِنْ جُحْرٍ مَرَّتَيْنِ اضْرِبْ عُنُقَهُ يَا عَاصِمُ بْنُ ثَابِتٍ، فَضَرَبَ عُنُقَهُ. [ مَقْتَلُ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ ] قَالَ ابْنُ هِشَامٍ: وَيُقَالُ: إنَّ زَيْدَ بْنَ حَارِثَةَ وَعَمَّارَ بْنَ يَاسِرٍ قَتَلَا مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنَ الْمُغِيرَةِ بَعْدَ حَمْرَاءِ الْأَسَدِ، كَانَ لَجَأَ إلَى عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عَفَّانَ فَاسْتَأْمَنَ لَهُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَأَمَّنَهُ، عَلَى أَنَّهُ إنْ وُجِدَ بَعْدَ ثَلَاثٍ قُتِلَ، فَأَقَامَ بَعْدَ ثَلَاثٍ وَتَوَارَى فَبَعَثَهُمَا النَّبِيُّ ﷺ، وَقَالَ: إنَّكُمَا سَتَجِدَانِهِ بِمَوْضِعِ كَذَا وَكَذَا، فَوَجَدَاهُ فَقَتَلَاهُ
Translation
✧ [The killing of Abū ʿAzzah and Muʿāwiyah b. al-Mughīrah] Abū ʿUbaydah said: And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ seized, in that direction, before his return to Madinah, Muʿāwiyah b. al-Mughīrah b. Abī al-ʿĀṣ b. Umayyah b. ʿAbd Shams, who is the grandfather of ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān, the father of his mother ʿĀʾishah bt. Muʿāwiyah, and Abū ʿAzzah al-Jumaḥī. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had captured him at Badr, then granted him a favor. He said: "O Messenger of Allah, spare me." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "By Allah, you will not wipe your cheeks in Makkah after this and say: I deceived Muhammad twice. Strike his neck, O Zubayr." So he struck his neck. Ibn Hishām said: It reached me from Saʿīd b. al-Musayyib that he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: "Indeed the believer is not stung from the same hole twice. Strike his neck, O ʿĀṣim b. Thābit." So he struck his neck. [The killing of Muʿāwiyah b. al-Mughīrah] Ibn Hishām said: And it is said that Zayd b. Ḥārithah and ʿAmmār b. Yāsir killed Muʿāwiyah b. al-Mughīrah after Ḥamrāʾ al-Asad. He had sought refuge with ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān, and he sought safe-conduct for him from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so he granted him safety, on condition that if he was found after three days he would be killed. He stayed after three days and went into hiding, so the Prophet ﷺ sent them and said: "You will find him in such-and-such a place." They found him and killed him.
