✧ Mention of the poetry recited on the day of Uḥud [The Poetry of Hubayrah] Ibn Isḥāq said: Among the poetry recited on the day of Uḥud was the saying of Hubayrah b. Abī Wahb b. ʿAmr b. ʿĀʾidh b. ʿAbd b. ʿImrān b. Makhzūm — Ibn Hishām said: ʿĀʾidh: b. ʿImrān b. Makhzūm: What is the matter with a severe anxiety that came to me by night, with affection from Hind when her calamities rush upon me Hind spent the night reproaching me and blaming me While war has distracted her allies from me Gently, do not blame me, for it is part of my nature What you have known, and what I do not conceal I am a helper of Banū Kaʿb in what they are burdened with A bearer of loads and heavy weights I shoulder I have carried my weapons upon a tall, swift horse That outstrips and outruns others when it runs, competing with them When it runs, it is like a wild ass on a hard, elevated plain A sturdy one, joining the mature females, protecting them From the lineage of Aʿwaj, the assembly delights in him Like the trunk of a hairy palm tree, high in its climbing places I prepared him and refined sharp blades, chosen And a spear for the great events I shall meet This, and a white coat of mail like a pool, firmly made Fastened upon me, so its flaws do not appear We drove Kinānah from the outskirts of Dhū Yaman Across the breadth of the lands, as it was urging them on Kinānah said: Where are you taking us? We said: To the palm groves, so head for them and whoever is in them We are the horsemen on the day of the charge at Uḥud Maʿadd feared it, but we said: We will come to it They feared striking and true piercing thrusts From what they saw, and its extremes were joined together Then we returned as if we were a cold cloud And the heads of Banū al-Najjār rose up weeping for her As if their heads in the battle were broken pieces Of speckled eggshells that the wind has blown away from their nesting places Or colocynth shaken by the wind among dry branches Worn away, tossed about by its gusts We pour out wealth freely without reckoning And we thrust the horses obliquely into the corners of their eyes On a night when the slaughterer warms himself by the paunch contents Its caller singles out the rich with the portion of the slaughtered camel's hump And a night of Jumādā with heavy rains A wintry, scabby night of Jumādā that I spent traveling through it No dog barks in it except once Because of the cold, nor do its vipers creep about I kindled in it for the one in distress a blazing fire Like lightning, with glowing corners, which I guarded That was inherited by ʿAmr and his father Before him, he used to vie for it with the double portion They used to compete with the rains of the stars, and never Did their efforts fall short of the highest peak [The Poetry of Ḥassān in Response to Hubayrah] Ibn Isḥāq said: Ḥassān b. Thābit answered him, saying: You drove Kinānah in ignorance, out of your foolishness To the Messenger, and the army of God disgraces her You brought her to the pools of death, exposed, So the Fire is her appointed place, and slaughter will meet her You gathered them as mixed mobs without nobility, Leaders of unbelief; their tyrants deceived you Will you not take warning from the horses of God when they killed The people of the pit and those whom they cast into it? How many a captive we ransomed without price, And cutting of forelocks, of whom we were the masters? Ibn Hishām said: Abū Zayd al-Anṣārī recited it to me as being by Kaʿb b. Mālik. Ibn Hishām said: The verse of Hubayrah b. Abī Wahb in which he says: On a night when the slaughterer warms himself by the paunch contents, Its caller singles out the rich with the portion of the slaughtered camel's hump is narrated as being by Janūb, sister of ʿAmr Dhū al-Kalb al-Hudhalī, in verses of hers on a day other than Uḥud. [The Poetry of Kaʿb in Response to Hubayrah] Ibn Isḥāq said: Kaʿb b. Mālik also said, answering Hubayrah b. Abī Wahb: Has the news reached Ghassān about us, while between us Lies a vast tract of land whose journey is winding Deserts and landmarks, as if their dust From afar were a still, broken cloud of dust In it the sturdy, large camels become weary and kneel, And the rain of years leaves it, so it becomes fertile In it are the carcasses of the exhausted, their bones gleaming Like the whitened linen of merchants spread out In it the wild cows and white antelopes walk in succession, And ostrich eggs whose shells are peeling Our fighting for our religion with every noble, polished mare In which the helmets gleam And every silent coat of mail in its covering, as if When it is worn, it is a flowing stream full of water But at Badr, ask those whom you met Of the people, and news of the unseen benefits We are in the land of fear; if its people Were other than us, they would have departed by night and dispersed When a rider comes from us, his word is: Prepare for what Ibn Ḥarb sends and gathers Whatever matters concern the people in their plotting against us, We are wider than all other people for it If it were other than us they plotted against altogether, They would have submitted and split apart We fight; no tribe of the people remains upon us Except that they fear and are terrified And when they built at al-ʿArḍ, our chiefs said: For what, if the honor is not defended, do we sow? Among us is the Messenger of God, we follow his command; When he says a word among us, we do not look beyond it The Spirit descended upon him from his Lord, Sent down from the air of heaven and raised up We consult him in what we desire, and our utmost Is that when he wishes, we obey and listen And the Messenger of God said when they appeared before us: Cast off from yourselves the terror of death and be eager And be like one who purchases life, drawing near To a King with whom one lives and to whom one returns But take up your swords and trust In God; indeed, the matter belongs entirely to God So we marched against them openly in their camps At forenoon, the white swords upon us, we do not humble ourselves With a dense, gathered force in which there are spearheads and lances, When they strike their feet, they do not hold back We came to a wave of the sea, in the midst of which Were mixed mobs from them, some bareheaded and some veiled Three thousand, while we were a chosen band, Three hundred, or if we were more, four hundred We exchange blows with them, fate running between us, We contend with them at the pool of death and we plunge in The bows of nabʿ wood sway among us and among them, And it is nothing but the Yathribī one that is cut And hollowed coats of mail, hot, Ṣāʿidī, On which poison is sprinkled at the hour they are made They strike the bodies of men, and sometimes They pass by the sides of the eyes, clattering And horses you see in the open space, as if they were Locusts in a cool wind, moving about Then when we met and the mill turned upon us, And there is no repelling a matter God has decreed, We struck them until we left their chiefs As if they were thrown-down wood on the plain From morning until we recovered in the evening, As if our blazing fire were the heat of a fire wrapped around And they departed swiftly, hastening, as if they were A rainless cloud whose water the departing wind has poured out And we returned, and our rear guard was slow, as if we were Lions crouching over meat at Bīshah So we attained and the people attained from us, and sometimes We acted, but what is with God is more ample Our mill turned, and their mill turned around, And they were all made to be filled with evil We are a people who do not consider killing a disgrace Upon everyone who defends what is sacred and protects We fight against the uncertainty of events; we do not see For any perished one an eye of ours weeping for all time Sons of war, we are not wearied by anything we say, Nor do we despair at what war brings Sons of war, if we prevail, we are not foul-mouthed, Nor do we complain of its claws We were a blazing fire whose heat people feared, And whoever comes near it moves aside and it scorches him You boasted over me, O Ibn al-Zibaʿrā, while a pursuit Came to you from the end of the night, following Ask about yourself among the high ranks of Maʿadd and others Of the people: who is more shameful in station and more hideous? And who is the one whom war has left no boast, And whose cheek on the day of hardship is most submissive? We pressed hard with the might of God and victory, a press Upon you, while the tips of the spearheads were swift The lances return again among you, as if their branches Were the spouts of water skins whose water pours out We aimed at the people of the banner, and whoever flies With the mention of the banner, he is swifter in praise They betrayed, after they had submitted and deserted one another; God refused except His command, and He is most skillful. Ibn Hishām said: Kaʿb b. Mālik had said: Our fighting for our root with every noble mare The Messenger of God ﷺ said: Is it right for you to say: Our fighting for our religion? Kaʿb said: Yes. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: That is better. So Kaʿb said: Our fighting for our religion.
