The Expedition of Uḥud

Translation

✧ [Mention of those who went out with the Messenger ﷺ to Ḥamrāʾ al-Asad] Ibn Isḥāq said: Then the Exalted said: "Those who responded to Allah and the Messenger after the wound had befallen them"—that is, the wounds—and they are the believers who marched with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the morrow of the day of Uḥud to Ḥamrāʾ al-Asad despite the pain of wounds that was upon them: "for those among them who did good and feared Allah is a great reward." "Those to whom the people said, 'Indeed, the people have gathered against you, so fear them,' but it increased them in faith, and they said, 'Sufficient for us is Allah, and He is the best Disposer of affairs.'" The people who said to them what they said were a party from ʿAbd al-Qays, those to whom Abū Sufyān said what he said. They said: Indeed Abū Sufyān and those with him are returning to you. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says: "So they returned with favor from Allah and bounty, no harm having touched them, and they pursued the pleasure of Allah, and Allah is the possessor of great bounty"—because Allah turned away from them the meeting with their enemy. "That is only Satan"—that is, concerning those individuals—"who frightens [you] of his allies"—that is, he terrifies you by means of his allies—"so do not fear them, but fear Me, if you are believers." "And let not those who hasten into disbelief grieve you"—that is, the hypocrites—"indeed, they will never harm Allah at all. Allah intends that He should give them no share in the Hereafter, and for them is a great punishment. Indeed, those who purchase disbelief with faith will never harm Allah at all, and for them is a painful punishment. And let not those who disbelieve think that Our granting them respite is good for themselves; We only grant them respite that they may increase in sin, and for them is a humiliating punishment. Allah would not leave the believers in that state you are in until He separates the evil from the good"—that is, the hypocrites—"and Allah would not inform you of the unseen"—that is, in what He intends to test you with, so that you may beware of what enters upon you therein—"but Allah chooses of His messengers whom He wills"—that is, He teaches him that—"so believe in Allah and His messengers. And if you believe and fear Allah"—that is, if you return and repent—"then for you is a great reward."
