The Expedition of Uḥud

✧ [ Abu Sufyan's Message to the Messenger via a Caravan ] A caravan of ʿAbd al-Qays passed by him, and he said: "Where are you heading?" They said: "We are heading to al-Madinah." He said: "And for what?" They said: "We want provisions." He said: "Will you convey a message from me to Muhammad, a message I send you with to him, and I will carry for you tomorrow raisins at ʿUkāẓ when you arrive there?" They said: "Yes." He said: "When you meet him, tell him that we have resolved to march against him and his companions to utterly destroy the remainder of them." The caravan passed by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was at Ḥamrāʾ al-Asad, and they told him what Abu Sufyan had said. He said: "Sufficient for us is Allah, and He is the best Disposer of affairs." [ Ṣafwān's Restraining of Abu Sufyan from Renewing the Attack ] Ibn Hishām said: Abu ʿUbaydah narrated to us: When Abu Sufyan b. Ḥarb withdrew on the day of Uḥud, he intended to return to al-Madinah to utterly destroy the remainder of the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Ṣafwān b. Umayyah b. Khalaf said to them: "Do not do it, for the people have become enraged, and we fear that there may be fighting other than what occurred, so return." So they returned. The Prophet ﷺ said, while he was at Ḥamrāʾ al-Asad, when he learned that they had intended to return: "By Him in Whose hand is my soul, stones were marked for them; had they been met with them in the morning, they would have been like yesterday that has passed."
