The Expedition of Uḥud
Translation
✧ [ Abu Sufyān's Gloating over the Muslims after Uḥud and His Conversation with ʿUmar ] Then Abū Sufyān b. Ḥarb, when he wanted to depart, looked down from the mountain, then shouted at the top of his voice and said: "You have done well. War is alternate: a day for a day. Exalted be Hubal!" meaning, make your religion prevail. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "Rise, ʿUmar, and answer him. Say: God is higher and more exalted. It is not equal. Our dead are in Paradise and your dead are in the Fire." When ʿUmar answered Abū Sufyān, Abū Sufyān said to him: "Come here to me, ʿUmar." The Messenger of God ﷺ said to ʿUmar: "Go to him and see what is the matter with him." He went to him, and Abū Sufyān said to him: "I adjure you by God, ʿUmar, have we killed Muḥammad?" ʿUmar said: "By God, no. He is listening to your words now." He said: "You are more truthful to me than Ibn Qamiʾah and more faithful than the statement of Ibn Qamiʾah to them: I have killed Muḥammad." Ibn Hishām said: The name of Ibn Qamiʾah was ʿAbd Allāh. [ Abū Sufyān's Threat to the Muslims ] Ibn Isḥāq said: Then Abū Sufyān called out: "There has been mutilation among your dead. By God, I did not approve, I did not disapprove, I did not forbid, and I did not command." When Abū Sufyān and those with him departed, he called out: "Your appointment is Badr next year." The Messenger of God ﷺ said to one of his companions: "Say: Yes, it is an appointment between us and you." [ ʿAlī's Going Out in Pursuit of the Polytheists ] Then the Messenger of God ﷺ sent ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib and said: "Go out in pursuit of the people and see what they are doing and what they intend. If they have led the horses aside and mounted the camels, then they intend Makkah. If they have mounted the horses and driven the camels, then they intend Madinah. By Him in whose hand is my soul, if they intend it, I will march against them in it, then I will fight them." ʿAlī said: "I went out in their pursuit to see what they were doing. They led the horses aside, mounted the camels, and headed for Makkah."
