The Expedition of Uḥud
Translation
✧ [Hind and her mutilation of Ḥamza] Ibn Isḥāq said: Hind bt. ʿUtba, as Ṣāliḥ b. Kaysān narrated to me, and the women who were with her fell upon the slain among the companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ, mutilating them, cutting off ears and noses, until Hind took from the ears and noses of the men anklets and necklaces, and she gave her anklets and necklaces and her earrings to Waḥshī, the slave of Jubayr b. Muṭʿim. And she slit open the liver of Ḥamza and chewed it, but she could not swallow it, so she spat it out. Then she climbed upon a high rock and screamed at the top of her voice, saying: We have repaid you for the day of Badr, and war after war is ablaze; I had no endurance for ʿUtba, nor for my brother, his uncle, and my firstborn. I have healed myself and fulfilled my vow; you have healed, O Waḥshī, the burning in my breast, so Waḥshī's gratitude is upon me for my lifetime, until my bones crumble in my grave. [Poetry of Hind bt. Uthātha in reply to Hind bt. ʿUtba] Hind bt. Uthātha b. ʿAbbād b. al-Muṭṭalib answered her, saying: You were disgraced at Badr and after Badr, O daughter of a great sinner of disbelief; may God smite you at dawn of the morning with the two Hāshimīs, tall and radiant, with every sharp sword that cuts; Ḥamza is my lion and ʿAlī my falcon; when Shayba and your father plotted treachery, they dyed the sides of his throat with blood, and your vow was evil, so the worst of vows. Ibn Hishām said: We omitted three verses from it in which she used obscene language. [More poetry of Hind bt. ʿUtba] Ibn Isḥāq said: Hind bt. ʿUtba also said: I healed myself of Ḥamza at Uḥud, until I slit his belly open for the liver; that removed from me what I used to find of the burning of intense, oppressive grief; war will come upon you with a cold downpour, advancing against you like a lion. [ʿUmar inciting Ḥassān to satirize Hind bt. ʿUtba] Ibn Isḥāq said: Ṣāliḥ b. Kaysān narrated to me that it was recounted that ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb said to Ḥassān b. Thābit: O son of al-Furayʿa—Ibn Hishām said: al-Furayʿa is bt. Khālid b. Khunays, and it is said Khunays is b. Ḥāritha b. Lawdhān b. ʿAbd Wudd b. Zayd b. Thaʿlaba b. al-Khazraj b. Sāʿida b. Kaʿb b. al-Khazraj—if you had heard what Hind is saying, and I saw her most insolent, standing upon a rock reciting rajaz verses against us, and mentioning what she did to Ḥamza? Ḥassān said to him: By God, I was indeed looking at the spear falling while I was at the top of Fāriʿ—meaning his fort—and I said: By God, this is a weapon that is not a weapon of the Arabs, and it seemed as though it was falling only toward Ḥamza, and I did not know; but let me hear some of what she said, and I will suffice you against her. He said: So ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb recited to him some of what she had said; and Ḥassān b. Thābit said: A vile woman exulted, and her custom was baseness whenever she exulted along with disbelief. Ibn Hishām said: This verse is among verses of his which we omitted, and also verses of his on the letter dāl, and other verses on the letter dhāl, because he used obscene language in them. [Al-Ḥulays disapproving of Abū Sufyān's mutilation of Ḥamza] Ibn Isḥāq said: Al-Ḥulays b. Zabbān, brother of the Banū al-Ḥārith b. ʿAbd Manāt, who was then the chief of the Aḥābīsh, had passed by Abū Sufyān while he was striking the cheek of Ḥamza b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib with the butt of a spear and saying: Taste that, O rebellious one. Al-Ḥulays said: O Banū Kināna, this is the chief of Quraysh doing to his cousin what you see—flesh? He said: Woe to you, conceal it from me, for it was a slip.
