The story of Salih (peace and blessings be upon him)
Translation
✧ The Prophet's ﷺ passing through the valley of al-Ḥijr in the land of Thamūd in the year of Tabūk When the Prophet ﷺ marched to Tabūk, he came upon the town of Thamūd and said to his companions: 'Let none of you enter the town, and do not drink from its water.' He showed them the climbing place of the weaned camel on the mountain, and he showed them the mountain pass through which the she-camel used to come to water. Al-Imām Aḥmad said with his chain of transmission on the authority of Ibn ʿUmar, who said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ encamped with the people at Tabūk, he encamped with them at al-Ḥijr near the dwellings of Thamūd. The people drew water from the wells from which Thamūd used to drink, and they kneaded dough with it and set up cooking pots. The Messenger of Allah ordered them, so they emptied the cooking pots and fed the dough to the camels. Then he departed with them until he encamped with them at the well from which the she-camel used to drink, and he forbade them to enter upon the people who had been punished, saying: 'I fear that the like of what befell them may befall you, so do not enter upon them.' Aḥmad also said with his chain of transmission on the authority of ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said while he was at al-Ḥijr: 'Do not enter upon these punished people except if you are weeping; and if you are not weeping, then do not enter upon them, lest the like of what befell them befall you.' They recorded it in the two Ṣaḥīḥs from more than one route. In some narrations, when he ﷺ passed by their dwellings, he covered his head and hastened his riding camel. In another narration: 'If you do not weep, then pretend to weep, for fear that the like of what befell them may befall you.' May the blessings and peace of Allah be upon him. Al-Imām Aḥmad said on the authority of ʿĀmir b. Saʿd ؓ, who said: During the expedition of Tabūk, the people hastened to the people of al-Ḥijr and began entering upon them. That reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so he called out among the people: 'Prayer in congregation.' He said: I came to the Prophet ﷺ while he was holding his camel and saying: 'Do you enter upon a people with whom Allah is angry?' A man called out to him: 'We marvel at them, O Messenger of Allah.' He said: 'Shall I not inform you of something more marvelous than that? A man from among yourselves who tells you of what was before you and what will be after you. So be upright and aim aright, for Allah pays no heed whatsoever to your punishment. And a people will come who will not defend themselves with anything.' The chain of transmission is ḥasan, and they did not record it.
