The Expedition of Uḥud

Translation

✧ The Martyrdom of Wahb b. Qābūs al-Muzanī and His Nephew From Muḥammad b. Saʿd, who said: Wahb b. Qābūs came with his nephew al-Ḥārith b. ʿUqbah, bringing sheep of theirs from Mount Muzaynah. They found Madinah empty, so they asked: "Where are the people?" They said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has gone out to fight the polytheists." They said: "We shall not ask for a trace after seeing with our own eyes." So they embraced Islam, then went out and came to the Prophet ﷺ at Uḥud. At that time the advantage was with the Muslims, so they raided with the Muslims in the plunder and fought the fiercest fighting. A party of the polytheists had separated, and the Prophet ﷺ said: "Who will take on this party?" Wahb said: "I will." He shot at them with arrows until they withdrew, then he returned. Another party separated, and the Prophet ﷺ said: "Who will take on this one?" The Muzanī said: "I will." [He drove them back with the sword until they fled, and the Muzanī returned. Then another battalion appeared, and he said: "Who will stand against it?" The Muzanī said: "I will."] He said: "Rise, and rejoice in Paradise." The Muzanī rose joyfully, saying: "By Allah, I will not rest nor seek to be relieved." He began to enter among them, striking with the sword until he came out from their farthest end, until they killed him and mutilated him. Then his nephew al-Ḥārith rose and fought in a manner similar to his fighting until he was killed. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood over the two of them while they lay slain and said: "ؓ For I am pleased with you." Then he stood on his feet, having suffered what he suffered of wounds, and he did not cease standing until the Muzanī was placed in his grave. ʿUmar and Saʿd b. Mālik used to say: "There is no state in which we die that is dearer to us than to meet Allah, Mighty and Majestic, in the state of the Muzanī."
