The Expedition of Uḥud
Translation
✧ [The matter of the slain at Uḥud] When the people had finished with their slain, the Messenger of God ﷺ said—as Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī Ṣaʿṣaʿah al-Māzinī, the brother of the Banū al-Najjār, narrated to me: “Who is a man who will look for me into what Saʿd b. al-Rabīʿ has done? Is he among the living or among the dead?” A man of the Anṣār said: “I will look for you, O Messenger of God, into what Saʿd has done.” So he looked and found him wounded among the slain, with a last breath still in him. He said: I said to him: “The Messenger of God ﷺ commanded me to look whether you are among the living or among the dead.” He said: “I am among the dead. Convey my greeting to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and tell him: Saʿd b. al-Rabīʿ says to you: May God reward you on our behalf with the best of what He rewards a prophet on behalf of his community. And convey my greeting to your people, and tell them: Saʿd b. al-Rabīʿ says to you: You have no excuse before God if any harm reaches your Prophet ﷺ while a single eye of yours blinks.” He said: Then I did not leave until he died. He said: Then I came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and told him his news. Ibn Hishām said: Abū Bakr al-Zubayrī narrated to me that a man entered upon Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq while a daughter of Saʿd b. al-Rabīʿ, a little girl, was on his chest, and he was kissing her and fondling her. The man said to him: “Who is this?” He said: “This is the daughter of a man better than I, Saʿd b. al-Rabīʿ. He was among the chiefs on the night of al-ʿAqabah, he witnessed Badr, and he was martyred on the day of Uḥud.” And Mālik b. al-Dukhshum passed by Saʿd b. al-Rabīʿ while he had twelve wounds, all of which had reached a fatal spot, and said: “Do you know that Muḥammad has been killed?” Saʿd said: “I bear witness that Muḥammad ﷺ has conveyed the message of his Lord, so fight for your religion, for God Most High is living and does not die.” I say: The man who sought Saʿd among the slain was Muḥammad b. Maslamah, as mentioned by Muḥammad b. ʿUmar al-Wāqidī, and he mentioned that he called him twice but he did not answer him, and when he said: “The Messenger of God commanded me to look into your news,” he answered him with a weak voice, and he mentioned it. And Shaykh Abū ʿUmar said in al-Istīʿāb: The man who sought Saʿd was Ubayy b. Kaʿb. And God knows best. Saʿd b. al-Rabīʿ was among the chiefs on the night of al-ʿAqabah ؓ, and he is the one between whom and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf the Messenger of God ﷺ established brotherhood.
