The Expedition of Uḥud

Translation

✧ [The slaying of ʿAmr b. al-Jamūḥ] Ibn Isḥāq said: My father Isḥāq b. Yasār narrated to me, from elders of the Banū Salimah: that ʿAmr b. al-Jamūḥ was a man severely lame, and he had four sons like lions, who attended the expeditions with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When the day of Uḥud came, they wanted to hold him back, and they said to him: Indeed Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has excused you. So he came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: My sons want to hold me back from this undertaking and from going out with you in it. By Allah, I hope to tread with this lameness of mine in Paradise. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: As for you, Allah has excused you, so there is no jihād upon you. And he said to his sons: What is upon you that you do not prevent him? Perhaps Allah will grant him martyrdom. So he went out with him and was killed on the day of Uḥud. Imām Aḥmad narrated from Qatādah b. al-Ḥārith b. Ribʿī al-Anṣārī, who said: ʿAmr b. al-Jamūḥ came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: O Messenger of Allah, have you considered, if I fight in the path of Allah until I am killed, will I walk with this leg of mine sound in Paradise?—and his leg was lame. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Yes.' So they killed him on the day of Uḥud, him and his brother's son and a freedman of theirs. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by him and said: 'It is as if I see you walking with this leg of yours sound in Paradise.' Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded concerning them, and they were placed in a single grave. End. His son Khallād b. ʿAmr was martyred, and ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr b. Ḥarām, the father of Jābir. Hind bt. ʿAmr b. Ḥarām, the wife of ʿAmr b. al-Jamūḥ, carried them on a camel of hers, intending to take them to Madinah. The Mother of the Believers ʿĀʾishah ؓ met her—and she had gone out among some women to seek news, and the veil had not yet been imposed at that time. She said to her: Do you have any news? What is behind you? She said: As for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he is safe, and every calamity after him is trivial. Allah took martyrs from among the believers, and Allah turned back those who disbelieved in their rage, they gained no good, and Allah sufficed the believers in fighting, and Allah is Strong, Mighty [al-Aḥzāb 25]. ʿĀʾishah said: Who are these? She said: My brother, and my son Khallād, and my husband ʿAmr b. al-Jamūḥ. She said: Where are you taking them? She said: To Madinah, to bury them there. Then she said: Ḥal ḥal, urging her camel, and it knelt. ʿĀʾishah said to her: Because of what it carries? She said: It is not that; it may carry what two camels carry, but I think it is for something else. And she urged it, and it rose, then knelt again. So she turned it back toward Uḥud, and it hastened. She returned to the Prophet ﷺ and told him of that. He said: The camel is commanded. Did ʿAmr say anything? She said: When ʿAmr turned toward Uḥud, he said: O Allah, do not return me to my family disappointed, and grant me martyrdom. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'That is why the camel does not go on. Among you, O company of the Anṣār, are those who, if they swore an oath by Allah, He would fulfill it for them. Among them is ʿAmr b. al-Jamūḥ, and I have seen him treading with his lameness in Paradise. O Hind, the angels have kept shading your brother from the time he was killed until this hour, waiting to see where he would be buried.' Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ waited until she had buried them, then said: 'O Hind, they have become companions together in Paradise.' She said: O Messenger of Allah, supplicate Allah that He may place me with them.
