The Expedition of Uḥud
Translation
✧ [ Qatādah's Ordeal and the Account of His Eye ] Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿĀṣim b. ʿUmar b. Qatādah related to me that the Messenger of God ﷺ shot with his bow until its siyah (curved end) broke, and Qatādah b. al-Nuʿmān took it, and it remained with him. On that day, the eye of Qatādah b. al-Nuʿmān was struck, until it fell onto his cheek. Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿĀṣim b. ʿUmar b. Qatādah related to me that the Messenger of God ﷺ put it back with his hand, and it became the better and sharper of his two eyes. From Abū Saʿīd, from his brother Qatādah b. al-Nuʿmān, who said: Both my eyes were struck on the day of Uḥud and fell onto my cheek. I brought them to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he put them back in their place and spat into them, and they returned shining. The well-known version is the first; that only one of his eyes was struck. For this reason, when his son came as a delegate to ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, he asked him, "Who are you?" He extemporized: I am the son of the one whose eye flowed down the cheek, and it was restored by the palm of al-Muṣṭafā with the finest restoration; so it returned as it was at first, O how fine an eye, and how fine a cheek! Then ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz said at that: Those are the noble deeds, not two wooden bowls of milk mixed with water, which afterwards turned into urine. Then he gave him gifts and was generous in his reward, ؓ.
