The Expedition of Uḥud
Translation
✧ The excellent conduct of al-Zubayr in the battle. Yūnus mentioned, from Ibn Isḥāq, that Ṭalḥah b. Abī Ṭalḥah al-ʿAbdarī, the standard-bearer of the polytheists on that day, called for single combat, but the people held back from him. Al-Zubayr b. al-ʿAwwām came out to him and leaped until he was with him on his camel, then he brought him down to the ground, threw him off, and slaughtered him with his sword. The Messenger of God ﷺ praised him, saying: "Every prophet has a disciple (ḥawārī), and my disciple is al-Zubayr." He also said: "Had he not come out to him, I myself would have come out to him, because of the people's holding back from him that I saw." From al-Zubayr b. al-ʿAwwām ؓ, he said: "By God, drowsiness was coming over me." In another narration: "I saw myself with the Messenger of God ﷺ on the day of Uḥud when fear intensified upon us and sleep was sent down upon us. There was none of us but his chin was on his chest. By God, I heard, as if in a dream, the words of Muʿattib b. Qushayr: 'If we had any part in the matter, we would not have been killed here.' So I memorized them. Then God, exalted is He, revealed concerning that: 'Then He sent down upon you, after distress, security—a slumber overcoming a party of you...' up to His words: '...we would not have been killed here' [Āl ʿImrān 154], like the words of Muʿattib b. Qushayr."
