The Expedition of Uḥud

Translation

✧ On the authority of Jābir, who said: The people fled from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day of Uḥud, and there remained with him eleven men from the Anṣār and Ṭalḥah b. ʿUbayd Allāh, while he was ascending the mountain. The polytheists caught up with them, so he said: “Is there no one for these?” Ṭalḥah said: “I, O Messenger of Allah.” He said: “Stay where you are, O Ṭalḥah.” A man from the Anṣār said: “Then I, O Messenger of Allah.” So he fought on his behalf, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ascended with those who remained with him. Then the Anṣārī was killed, and they caught up with him, so he said: “Is there no man for these?” Ṭalḥah said the like of his previous words, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said the like of his previous words. A man from the Anṣār said: “Then I, O Messenger of Allah.” So he gave him permission. He fought like the fighting of his companion and the fighting of his fellow, while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his companions were ascending. Then he was killed, and they caught up with him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not cease saying the like of his first words, and Ṭalḥah saying: “I, O Messenger of Allah,” so he held him back. Then a man from the Anṣār sought his permission to fight, and he permitted him, and he fought like those before him, until none remained with him except Ṭalḥah. Then they overwhelmed the two of them, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Who is for these?” Ṭalḥah said: “I.” So he fought like the fighting of all those before him, and his fingertips were injured. He said: “Ḥass.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “If you had said: ‘In the name of Allah,’ or mentioned the name of Allah, the angels would have raised you while the people were looking at you, until they entered with you into the atmosphere of the sky.” Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ascended to his companions, while they were gathered. On the authority of Anas, that Abū Ṭalḥah was shooting arrows in front of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day of Uḥud, while the Prophet ﷺ was behind him using him as a shield. He was an archer, and when he shot, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would raise his person to look where his arrow fell, and Abū Ṭalḥah would raise his chest and say: “Like this, may my father and mother be your ransom, O Messenger of Allah, let no arrow strike you; my neck is before your neck.” Abū Ṭalḥah would offer himself before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and say: “I am sturdy, O Messenger of Allah, so direct me in your needs and command me with whatever you wish.” On the authority of Qays b. Abī Ḥāzim, who said: I saw the hand of Ṭalḥah paralyzed; he had shielded the Prophet ﷺ with it on the day of Uḥud. Abū Ṭalḥah was overcome by drowsiness during the battle On the authority of Abū Ṭalḥah, who said: I was among those whom drowsiness overcame on the day of Uḥud, until my sword fell from my hand repeatedly; it would fall and I would take it, and it would fall and I would take it. Al-Bukhārī mentioned it in this manner as a muʿallaq report with a form of certainty, and it is supported by the saying of the Almighty: “Then after distress He sent down upon you security—drowsiness overcoming a party of you, while another party cared only for themselves, thinking of Allah other than the truth, the thought of ignorance, saying, ‘Is there anything for us in the matter?’ Say, ‘Indeed, the matter belongs entirely to Allah.’ They conceal within themselves what they do not reveal to you, saying, ‘If there was anything for us in the matter, we would not have been killed here.’ Say, ‘Even if you had been in your homes, those for whom killing was decreed would have come out to their resting places.’ And that Allah might test what is in your breasts and purify what is in your hearts. And Allah is Knowing of what is within the breasts. [003:155]” “Indeed, those of you who turned back on the day the two hosts met—it was Satan who caused them to slip because of some of what they had earned. But Allah has pardoned them. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Forbearing. [Āl ʿImrān: 154, 155]”
