The Expedition of Uḥud
Translation
✧ [ The Manner of Abū Sufyān in Inciting Quraysh ] Ibn Isḥāq said: Abū Sufyān said to the banner-bearers of Banū ʿAbd al-Dār, inciting them thereby to fight: “O Banū ʿAbd al-Dār, you were entrusted with our banner on the day of Badr, and what you saw befell us. People are only struck down from the direction of their banners: when they waver, they waver. So either you suffice us in guarding our banner, or you make way between us and it, and we will suffice you in that.” They took him to task for it and threatened him, and said: “We shall hand over our banner to you; tomorrow, when we meet, you will know how we act.” And that was what Abū Sufyān wanted. [ The Incitement of Hind and the Women with Her ] When the people met and drew close to one another, Hind bt. ʿUtbah rose among the women who were with her, and they took up the tambourines, striking them behind the men, and inciting them. Hind said among her words: Hey, Banū ʿAbd al-Dār! Hey, protectors of the rear! Striking with every cutting sword! And she said: If you advance, we embrace you, and spread the cushions; Or if you retreat, we part from you, a parting of one who does not love.
