The Expedition of Uḥud

Translation

✧ The marshaling of the polytheist army Ibn Isḥāq said: Quraysh drew up in battle order, and they were three thousand men, with them two hundred horses which they had led alongside. Over the right wing of the cavalry they placed Khālid b. al-Walīd, and over its left wing ʿIkrimah b. Abī Jahl. [The affair of Abū ʿĀmir the reprobate] Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿĀṣim b. ʿUmar b. Qatādah related to me that Abū ʿĀmir, ʿAbd ʿAmr b. Ṣayfī b. Mālik b. al-Nuʿmān, one of the Banū Ḍubayʿah, had gone out when he departed for Makkah, distancing himself from the Messenger of God ﷺ, with him fifty youths from the Aws, though some people used to say they were fifteen men. He had been promising Quraysh that if he should meet his people, not two men among them would differ over him. When the people met, the first of them to encounter them was Abū ʿĀmir among the Aḥābīsh and the servants of the people of Makkah. He called out: "O company of the Aws, I am Abū ʿĀmir." They said: "May God not delight an eye with you, O reprobate." Abū ʿĀmir used to be called in the Jāhiliyyah "the monk," but the Messenger of God ﷺ named him "the reprobate." When he heard their reply to him, he said: "My people have indeed met with evil after me." Then he fought them with fierce fighting, then he pelted them with stones.
