✧ The Expedition of Uḥud [The Incitement to Fight the Messenger] When on the day of Badr the disbelievers of Quraysh, the people of the well, were struck down, and their remnant returned to Makkah, and Abū Sufyān b. Ḥarb returned with his caravan, ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Rabīʿah, ʿIkrimah b. Abī Jahl, and Ṣafwān b. Umayyah went about among men of Quraysh whose fathers, sons, and brothers had been struck down on the day of Badr. They spoke to Abū Sufyān b. Ḥarb and to those of Quraysh who had merchandise in that caravan, saying: “O company of Quraysh, Muḥammad has bereaved you and killed your best men, so aid us with this wealth in waging war against him, that perhaps we may attain from him our vengeance for those of us he has struck down.” And they did so. [What Was Revealed in the Qurʾān Concerning That] Ibn Isḥāq said: It was concerning them, as some of the people of knowledge related to me, that God Most High revealed: “Those who disbelieve spend their wealth to bar from the way of God; they will spend it, then it will become a regret for them, then they will be overcome; and those who disbelieve will be gathered to Hell.” [The Gathering of Quraysh for War] So Quraysh gathered for war against the Messenger of God ﷺ when Abū Sufyān b. Ḥarb and the owners of the caravan did that, along with its confederate allies and those who obeyed it from the tribes of Kinānah and the people of Tihāmah. The Incitement of Abū ʿAzzah the Poet to War against the Messenger of God ﷺ Abū ʿAzzah ʿAmr b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Jumaḥī had been granted a favor by the Messenger of God ﷺ on the day of Badr. He was poor, with dependents and need, and was among the captives. He said: “I am poor, with dependents and need, which you have known, so grant me a favor, may God bless you and grant you peace.” So the Messenger of God ﷺ granted him a favor. Ṣafwān b. Umayyah said to him: “O Abū ʿAzzah, you are a poet, so aid us with your tongue and go out with us.” He said: “Muḥammad has granted me a favor, and I do not wish to aid against him.” He said: “Indeed, aid us with your own self, and I pledge to you by God that if I return I will enrich you, and if you are struck down I will place your daughters among my daughters, so that whatever hardship or ease befalls them will befall them too.” So Abū ʿAzzah went out in Tihāmah, summoning Banū Kinānah and saying: Ho, Banū ʿAbd Manāt the steadfast, You are protectors, and your father is a protector. Do not deny me your help after the year; Do not surrender me; surrendering is not lawful. The Incitement of Musāfiʿ b. ʿAbd Manāf to War against the Messenger of God ﷺ Musāfiʿ b. ʿAbd Manāf b. Wahb b. Ḥudhāfah b. Jumaḥ went out to Banū Mālik b. Kinānah, inciting them and summoning them to war against the Messenger of God ﷺ, and said: O Mālik, Mālik of the foremost honor, I adjure the near kin and the mindful Whoever has ties of womb and whoever does not show mercy, The pact in the midst of the sacred town, At the enclosing wall of the venerated Kaʿbah. Quraysh, while at al-Abwāʾ, considered exhuming the grave of Āminah, the mother of the Messenger of God ﷺ, but God Most High restrained them from that. Abū al-Walīd al-Azraqī related from Hishām b. ʿĀṣim al-Aslamī, who said: When Quraysh went out against the Prophet ﷺ in the expedition of Uḥud and encamped at al-Abwāʾ, Hind bt. ʿUtbah said to Abū Sufyān: “Will you not search out the grave of Muḥammad's mother, for she is at al-Abwāʾ? If he captures any of you, you may ransom every person with a limb from her limbs.” He mentioned that to Quraysh and said: “This is the right opinion.” Quraysh said: “Do not open this door, lest Banū Bakr open our dead.”
