The Conversion of Ḥuwayyiṣa b. Masʿūd and Its Cause

Translation

✧ Muḥammad b. Isḥāq said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Whomsoever you seize of the men of the Jews, kill him.” At that, Muḥayyiṣa b. Masʿūd al-Awsī—variously called Muḥayyiṣa b. Masʿūd b. Kaʿb b. ʿĀmir b. ʿAdī b. Majdaʿa b. Ḥāritha b. al-Ḥārith b. al-Khazraj b. ʿAmr b. Mālik b. al-Aws—leaped upon Ibn Sunayna. Ibn Hishām said: It is also said Subayna—a man of the Jewish merchants whom he used to associate with and trade with—and killed him. His brother Ḥuwayyiṣa b. Masʿūd was older than him and had not yet embraced Islam. When he killed him, Ḥuwayyiṣa began striking him and saying: “O enemy of Allah, you killed him? By Allah, how much fat is in your belly from his wealth!” Muḥayyiṣa said: “By Allah, he who commanded me to kill him is one who, if he commanded me to kill you, I would strike your neck.” He said: “By Allah, that was the first of Ḥuwayyiṣa’s Islam.” And he said: “By Allah, if Muḥammad commanded you to kill me, would you kill me?!” He said: “Yes. By Allah, if he commanded me to strike your neck, I would strike it.” He said: “By Allah, a religion that has brought you to this is a wonder.” So Ḥuwayyiṣa embraced Islam. Ibn Isḥāq said: A client of the Banū Ḥāritha related this tradition to me from the daughter of Muḥayyiṣa, from her father. And Muḥayyiṣa said about that: A son of a mother blames me—had I been commanded to kill him I would have pressed the back of his neck with a white, cutting blade like the color of salt, whose polish was perfected. Whenever I aim it, it is not false. It would not please me that I killed you willingly, and that we had all between Buṣrā and Maʾrib. [Another account of the conversion of Ḥuwayyiṣa] Ibn Hishām said: Abū ʿUbayda related to me from Abū ʿAmr al-Madanī, who said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ seized the Banū Qurayẓa, he took about four hundred men of the Jews, who were allies of the Aws against the Khazraj. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded that their necks be struck. The Khazraj began striking their necks and were pleased by it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ looked at the Khazraj with their faces rejoicing, and he looked at the Aws and did not see that in them. He thought that was because of the alliance between the Aws and Banū Qurayẓa. Only twelve men of Banū Qurayẓa remained, so he handed them over to the Aws. He gave to every two men of the Aws one man of Banū Qurayẓa and said: “Let so-and-so strike and let so-and-so dispatch.” Among those he handed over to them was Kaʿb b. Yahūdhā, who was a great man among Banū Qurayẓa. He handed him over to Muḥayyiṣa b. Masʿūd and to Abū Burda b. Niyār—Abū Burda being the one to whom the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave dispensation to slaughter a jadhaʿa of goat as a sacrificial animal—and said: “Let Muḥayyiṣa strike him and let Abū Burda dispatch him.” Muḥayyiṣa struck him a blow that did not sever, and Abū Burda dispatched him and finished him off. Then Ḥuwayyiṣa, who was an unbeliever, said to his brother Muḥayyiṣa: “Did you kill Kaʿb b. Yahūdhā?” He said: “Yes.” Ḥuwayyiṣa said: “By Allah, how much fat has grown in your belly from his wealth! You are base, O Muḥayyiṣa.” Muḥayyiṣa said to him: “The one who commanded me to kill him is one who, if he commanded me to kill you, I would kill you.” He was astonished at his words, then he went away from him in amazement. They mentioned that he would wake during the night and marvel at the words of his brother Muḥayyiṣa, until he woke in the morning saying: “By Allah, this is surely a religion.” Then he came to the Prophet ﷺ and embraced Islam.
