The Expedition of Uḥud
Translation
✧ The excellence of Mount Uḥud and the reason for its naming. Uḥud was named Uḥud because of its isolation (tawaḥḥud) from among those mountains. In the Ṣaḥīḥ: "Uḥud is a mountain that loves us and that we love." It was said its meaning is its people. And it was said: because it would give him good tidings of the nearness of his family when he returned from his journey, as a lover does. And it was said: according to its literal sense, like His saying: "And indeed among them is one that splits open and water gushes forth from it, and indeed among them is one that falls down from fear of God" [al-Baqarah: 74]. And in the hadith from Abū ʿAbs b. Jabr: "Uḥud loves us and we love it, and it is at the gate of Paradise, while ʿAyr hates us and we hate it, and it is at a gate among the gates of Hell." Al-Suhaylī said, supporting this hadith: It is established that he ﷺ said: "A man is with the one he loves." This is among the strange doings of al-Suhaylī; for this hadith is only intended for people, and a mountain is not called a man. Yāqūt said in his Muʿjam and others: It is a red mountain without jagged peaks, between it and Madinah there is less than a farsakh, and it lies to the north of it.
