The Expedition of al-Furʿ (the Expedition of Banū Sulaym)
فَخَرَجَ النبي ﷺ فِي ثَلَاثِمِائَةِ رَجُلٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ، وَاسْتَخْلَفَ عَلَى الْمَدِينَةِ ابْنَ أُمِّ مَكْتُومٍ وَلَمْ يُظْهِرْ وَجْهًا لِلسَّيْرِ، حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَ دُونَ نَجْرَانَ بِلَيْلَةٍ لَقِيَ رَجُلًا مِنْ بَنِي سُلَيْمٍ فَأَخْبَرَهُمْ أَنَّ الْقَوْمَ افْتَرَقُوا فَحَبَسَهُ مَعَ رَجُلٍ، وَسَارَ حَتَّى وَرَدَ نَجْرَانَ وَلَيْسَ بِهِ أَحَدٌ، فَأَقَامَ أَيَّاماً. قَالَ الْوَاقِدِيُّ: عَشْرَةً. وَقَالَ ابْنُ إِسْحَاقَ: أَقَامَ شَهْرَ رَبِيعِ الْآخَرَ وَجُمَادَى الْأُولَى، ثُمَّ رَجَعَ وَلَمْ يَلْقَ كَيْدًا وَأَرْسَلَ الرَّجُلَ. ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَ رَاجِعًا إِلَى الْمَدِينَةِ. وَكَانَتْ غَيْبَتُهُ عَشْرَ لَيَالٍ.
Translation
✧ The Prophet ﷺ set out with three hundred men of his companions, and left Ibn Umm Maktūm in charge of Madinah. He did not reveal the direction of the march until, when he was a night’s distance from Najrān, he met a man from Banū Sulaym who informed them that the people had dispersed. He detained him with a man, and marched on until he reached Najrān, where there was no one. He stayed there for some days. Al-Wāqidī said: ten. Ibn Isḥāq said: he stayed for the month of Rabīʿ al-Ākhir and Jumādā al-Ūlā, then he returned without encountering any hostility and released the man. Then he departed back to Madinah. His absence was ten nights.
