The Expedition of Banū Sulaym (the Expedition of Qarqarat al-Kudr)
غَزْوَةُ بَنِي سُلَيْمٍ (غَزْوَةُ قَرْقَرَةِ الْكُدْرِ). وَقَعَتْ فِي سَنَةِ اثْنَيْنِ مِنَ الْهِجْرَةِ، وَذَلِكَ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ بَلَغَهُ أَنَّ بَنِي سُلَيْمٍ قَدِ اجْتَمَعُوا عَلَى مَاءٍ لَهُمْ يُقَالُ لَهُ الْكُدْرُ، فَخَرَجَ إِلَيْهِمْ وَاسْتَخْلَفَ عَلَى الْمَدِينَةِ سِبَاعَ بْنَ عُرْفُطَةَ أَوِ ابْنَ أُمِّ مَكْتُومٍ، وَحَمَلَ لِوَاؤُهُ عَلِيٌّ حَتَّى مَأْمَنِ مَائِهِمْ فَلَمْ يَجِدْ أَحَدًا، وَوَجَدُوا فِي الْوَادِي رِعَاءً وَغَنَمًا وَرَاعِيًا يُسَمَّى يَسَارٌ فَبَقِيَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ ثَلَاثَ لَيَالٍ ثُمَّ عَادَ إِلَى الْمَدِينَةِ بِالنِّعَمِ وَقَسَمَهَا بَيْنَ أَصْحَابِهِ وَوَقَعَ يَسَارٌ فِي سَهْمِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَأَعْتَقَهُ وَقَدْ أَسُلَمَ.
Translation
✧ The Expedition of Banū Sulaym (the Expedition of Qarqarat al-Kudr). It took place in the year two of the Hijrah. That is because the Prophet ﷺ learned that Banū Sulaym had gathered at a watering place of theirs called al-Kudr, so he went out to them, leaving as his deputy over Madinah Sibāʿ b. ʿUrfuṭah or Ibn Umm Maktūm. His banner was carried by ʿAlī until he reached the vicinity of their water, but he found no one. In the valley they found shepherds, sheep, and a shepherd named Yasār. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ remained there for three nights, then returned to Madinah with the livestock and divided them among his companions. Yasār fell to the Prophet's ﷺ share, so he freed him, and he had already become a Muslim.
