The Great Expedition of Badr
[ الرَّسُولُ يُحِلُّ دَمَ هَبَّارٍ ] قَالَ ابْنُ إسْحَاقَ: حَدَّثَنِي يَزِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي حَبِيبٍ، عَنْ بُكَيْرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْأَشَجِّ، عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ يَسَارٍ، عَنْ أَبِي إسْحَاقَ الدَّوْسِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ: بَعَثَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ سَرِيَّةً أَنَا فِيهَا، فَقَالَ لَنَا: إنْ ظَفِرْتُمْ بِهَبَّارِ بْنِ الْأَسْوَدِ، أَوْ الرَّجُلِ ( الْآخَرِ ) الَّذِي سَبَقَ مَعَهُ إلَى زَيْنَبَ - قَالَ ابْنُ هِشَامٍ: وَقَدْ سَمَّى ابْنُ إسْحَاقَ الرَّجُلَ فِي حَدِيثِهِ ( وَقَالَ: هُوَ نَافِعُ بْنُ عَبْدِ قَيْسٍ ) - فَحَرَّقُوهُمَا بِالنَّارِ. قَالَ: فَلَمَّا كَانَ الْغَدُ بَعَثَ إلَيْنَا، فَقَالَ: إنِّي كُنْتُ أَمَرْتُكُمْ بِتَحْرِيقِ هَذَيْنِ الرَّجُلَيْنِ إنْ أَخَذْتُمُوهُمَا، ثُمَّ رَأَيْتُ أَنَّهُ لَا يَنْبَغِي لِأَحَدٍ أَنْ يُعَذِّبَ بِالنَّارِ إلَّا اللَّهُ، فَإِنْ ظَفَرْتُمْ بِهِمَا فَاقْتُلُوهُمَا. وَأَمَا هبار بن الأسود، فَهُوَ الَّذِي عَرَضَ لزينب بنت رسول الله ﷺ حِينَ هَاجَرَتْ، فَنَخَسَ بِهَا حَتَّى سَقَطَتْ عَلَى صَخْرَةٍ وَأَسْقَطَتْ جَنِينَهَا، فَفَرَّ ثُمَّ أَسْلَمَ وَحَسُنَ إِسْلَامُهُ
Translation
✧ [ The Messenger permits the blood of Habbār ] Ibn Isḥāq said: Yazīd b. Abī Ḥabīb narrated to me, from Bukayr b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ashajj, from Sulaymān b. Yasār, from Abū Isḥāq al-Dawsī, from Abū Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ dispatched a raiding party in which I was included, and he said to us: “If you seize Habbār b. al-Aswad, or the (other) man who preceded with him to Zaynab” — Ibn Hishām said: Ibn Isḥāq named the man in his account (and said: he is Nāfiʿ b. ʿAbd Qays) — “burn them both with fire.” He said: The next day he sent for us and said: “I had commanded you to burn these two men if you captured them, but then I considered that no one should punish with fire except Allah; so if you seize them, kill them.” As for Habbār b. al-Aswad, he is the one who intercepted Zaynab bt. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when she emigrated, and he prodded her until she fell onto a rock and miscarried her fetus. He then fled, and later embraced Islam, and his Islam became good.
