أَخْبَرَنِي مَخْلَدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ الْبَاقَرْحِيُّ ثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَرِيرٍ قَالَ قَالَ
أَبُوعُبَيْدَةَ مَعْمَرُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى «ثُمَّ تَزَوَّجَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ حِينَ قَدِمَ عَلَيْهِ وَفْدُ كِنْدَةَ قُتَيْلَةَ بِنْتَ قَيْسٍ أُخْتَ الْأَشْعَثِ بْنِ قَيْسٍ فِي سَنَةِ عَشْرَةٍ ثُمَّ اشْتَكَى فِي النِّصْفِ مِنْ صَفَرٍ ثُمَّ قُبِضَ يَوْمَ الِاثْنَيْنِ لِيَوْمَيْنِ مَضَيَا مِنْ شَهْرِ رَبِيعٍ الْأَوَّلِ وَلَمْ تَكُنٍ قَدِمَتْ عَلَيْهِ وَلَا دَخَلَ بِهَا» وَوَقَّتَ بَعْضُهُمْ وَقْتَ تَزْوِيجِهِ إِيَّاهَا فَزَعَمَ أَنَّهُ تَزَوَّجَهَا قَبْلَ وَفَاتِهِ بِشَهْرٍ وَزَعَمَ آخَرُونَ أَنَّهُ تَزَوَّجَهَا فِي مَرَضِهِ وَزَعَمَ آخَرُونَ أَنَّهُ أَوْصَى أَنْ يُخَيِّرَ قُتَيْلَةَ فَإِنْ شَاءَتْ فَاخْتَارَتِ النِّكَاحَ فَزُوِّجَهَا عِكْرِمَةُ بْنُ أَبِي جَهْلٍ بِحَضْرَمَوْتَ فَبَلَغَ أَبَا بَكْرٍ فَقَالَ لَقَدْ هَمَمْتُ أَنْ أُحَرِّقَ عَلَيْهِمَا فَقَالَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ مَا هِيَ مِنْ أُمَّهَاتِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَلَا دَخَلَ بِهَا النَّبِيُّ ﷺ وَلَا ضَرَبَ عَلَيْهَا الْحِجَابَ وَزَعَمَ بَعْضُهُمْ أَنَّهَا ارْتَدَّتْ

✧ Abu 'Ubayda Ma'mar b. al-Muthanna said: «Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ married, when the delegation of Kinda came to him, Qutayla bt. Qays, the sister of al-Ash'ath b. Qays, in the year ten. Then he fell ill in the middle of Safar, then he passed away on Monday, two days having passed of the month of Rabi' al-Awwal, and she had not arrived to him and he had not consummated the marriage with her.» Some of them specified the time of his marriage to her and claimed that he married her a month before his death. Others claimed that he married her during his illness. Others claimed that he instructed that Qutayla be given a choice, and if she wished, [she could choose marriage], so she chose marriage, and 'Ikrima b. Abi Jahl married her in Hadramawt. This reached Abu Bakr, and he said: I have considered burning the two of them. 'Umar b. al-Khattab said: She is not one of the Mothers of the Believers, the Prophet ﷺ did not consummate the marriage with her, nor did he impose the hijab on her. And some of them claimed that she apostatized.
