✧ We were with the Prophet ﷺ when a delegation of Banū Tamīm came to him, among them Qays ibn ʿĀṣim, ʿAmr ibn al-Ahtam, and al-Zibriqān ibn Badr. The Prophet ﷺ said to ʿAmr ibn al-Ahtam: “What do you say about al-Zibriqān ibn Badr?” He said: “O Messenger of Allah, he is obeyed in his assembly, sharp-tongued, and protective of what is behind his back.” Al-Zibriqān said: “O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, he knows about me more than what he described, but he envied me.” ʿAmr said: “By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, he is deficient in manliness, narrow in his enclosure, vile in maternal uncle, and foolish in his origins. By Allah, I did not lie at first, and I spoke the truth at last. But I was pleased, so I said the best of what I knew, and I became angry, so I said the worst of what I knew.” The Prophet ﷺ said: “Indeed, some eloquence is sorcery, and indeed, some poetry is wisdom.”
